12 years after John McClane saved the world again, he is back with this action packed block buster.
Everyone knows Die Hard; the first film was probably one of the best action films ever made. Yes the concept of the same man having all of these Armageddon's if you will in his life is pretty stupid, but I always want more.
I got this from our shop yesterday and was pleasantly surprised with it; I had heard it was the best one yet.
The Plot
The script is very good, and very believable in this day and age. When someone hacks in to the government's main database, they start to get worried. The FBI tries to find all of the hackers that could have done this, but someone beats them to it, the people that caused this whole catastrophe.
John McClane is sent to pick up Mathew Farrell and only gets to him just in time. From then on, they are on the run to find who is trying to ruin the USA and why they are trying to kill Farrell.
What I thought
This is probably one of the best ones, no it can't beat the first one, but in special effects it does. The second and third one was a slight disappointment, but the fourth instalment makes up for it.
In my opinion Bruce Willis is slightly a bit too old to do this, but like always he pulled it off alright.
The film itself is very believable and quite worrying in some places. It uses 9/11 as a background to the storyline and I think this is what makes it so believable. Did the US government protect themselves enough after 9/11?
Special Effects
The special effects in this film were amazing; they went all out on them. From driving planes into helicopters to having ANOTHER lift scene it's fantastic.
Cast & Crew
The 52 year old Bruce Willis reprises his role for maybe the final time as the detective John McClane. Now divorced from his wife and estranged from his children, his living a normal life of a New York City cop, until he has to go and pick up Matthew Farrell.
Surprisingly he was alright in this film. It didn't work as well as the 1st instalment and I couldn't get passed the fact that he was in his 50's and still running around like a mad man, but I have to say nearer to the end you do feel like this role was written for him and only Bruce Willis could do this film.
Matthew Farrell played by the wonderful Justin Long. My problem with Long's character is the fact that it's the kid out of Jeepers Creepers and Dodge ball trying to play a hacker. He wasn't as bad as I though he would be, but if you have watched those films like I had, you'll understand what I mean.
He is a pretty good actor and has good chemistry with Bruce Willis, but I didn't believe the hacker part for a second.
Len Weisman directed this wonderful movie following in the footsteps of John McTiernan and Renny Harlin he does a very good job. I wasn't too keen on going to see this film because it followed Die Hard: With A Vengeance and because Weisman was directing it.
I've always thought Weisman was a bit of a one trick pony with only the likes of Underworld & Men in Black under his belt, but he was actually a very good director and made what could have been a crap film into something very enjoyable.
Mary Elizabeth Winsted was another good addition to the team, she plays little Lucy all grown up. She has quite a main part in the film and takes the place of Holly (her mother). It's a shame her brother Jack wasn't in the film.
Another good actor in the film had to be Timothy Olyphant, he plays the horrible terrorist who actually built all of the protection for the American government buts wants to have revenge. He's a great actor, very compelling and you do believe he's pretty evil.
Other Things
The film was quite comical as the other three were as well; Bruce Willis delivers his one liners again and again at the right moments which have you laughing all the way through.
Despite the fact that I could only see Justin Long being hit in the face with a dodge ball all the time, he was actually a good asset to the Die Hard team.
I'll always be a big fan of Die Hard 1 which came out all those years ago in 1988, but Weisman uses all of the technology available and makes this into a very enjoyable action packed movie.
I did find the film quite long, it's just over two hours but by the end I did get quite restless. It's a good film to watch when there's nothing else on telly but other than that I think most people would struggle to sit through the whole 2 hours and 10 minutes.
It's a good film and I recommend it to anyone.
Film Title: Die Hard 4.0
Run Time: 130minutes
Language: English/Italian/French
Director: Len Weisman
Writer: Mark Bomback
Release Date: 4th July 2007
Main Characters: Bruce Willis, Justin Long, Mary Elizabeth Winsted, Timothy Olyphant, Cliff Curtis and Kevin Smith.
Advantages: A decent return for the 4th outing of John McClane Disadvantages: A little Cheesy Cinema release date of the 4th July
...was a little surprising that Die Hard returned earlier this year. In fact the return of the Die Hard series came as a bit of a surprise. It was always inevitable that it would return but as the years passed and it didn't I was beginning to feel it was a lot less likely. The end result though is a thoroughly enjoyable action film that despite it's two hour run time doesn't drag on too much and more importantly doesn't take itself too seriously. This ... ...stayed true to the old Die Hard formula and created an enjoyable movie. Likewise it is one of writer Mark Bomback's first forays into major feature films and like Wiseman he has kept the plot true to the original Die Hard concept. They have managed to fit in a number of McClane's catchphrases and keep his character as determined and willing as always.
Of course the 4th instalment of the series couldn't have worked without the return of Bruce Willis ...

Another brilliant Die hard sage with some fantastic CGIs and some marvellous stunts, (although one or two of the stunts are way over the top, being more comical than anything else)
The story has a real 21st century feel, using the idea of computers being used by terrorist instead of bombs… a sort of more subtle look at terrorism, (if there is one).
It is an action packed movie, more or less right from the opening credit, giving a ...

Advantages: Rollicking action from start to finish Disadvantages: Not much of a storyline
...I have enjoyed all the Die Hard films in the past, so I reluctantly decided to watch this one, the latest in the collection. As it is a number of years since the third one, I was a little concerned about Bruce Willis and how he would come over - he is in his fifties now after all. However, I was really impressed by his performance. He manages to mix aggression with a touch of humour very well, making his character in the film very watchable. There ... ...for a brief glimpse of his difficult relationship with his daughter at the beginning of the film, but because we already have an idea of his character from the previous films, I don't think character development is all that necessary. This is an action film after all. Then again, someone who has not seen any of the previous films could easily watch this as a stand-alone film. I really liked the character of Matt Farrell, who is played by Justin Long. ...

...those who are about to die with a grey filter. His editing is sharp and keeps the many chase sequences snappy and the big set-pieces reasonably tense.
This film is all about the stunts. In most movies, a moment where a car takes down a helicopter would be the big finale. But not here - the director has way more tricks up his sleeve, with each stunt sequence bigger and more eye-boggling than the last. There are huge flaming balls of death, free-running ... ...that may remind you of the first "Die Hard" and one sequence with a plane that will have you gawping in disbelief. The rate at which the action scenes pile up one after the other will take your breath away. We're barely two minutes in before the first explosion. This breathless pace is what keeps you glued to the screen for the entire hundred and twenty-nine minutes. This is old-school action movie making - there is a seemingly unending supply of ...

...atomosphere surrounding the release of Die Hard 4 was coloured significantly by the much-laboured fact that twelve years had passed since Willis had last pulled on 'The White Vest' and gone to get his vengence, but it would appear that the series, and the man himself, have aged something like a fine wine. I will admit, when i heard that the theme of electronic terrorism was going to be the lynchpin of the plot pf the new film, I was significantly ... ...mind, well worthy of the Die Hard badge, despite the twelve year recess. In fact, perhaps this was just what the doctor ordered for a series that was becoming unfortunately tired, following a dreary Die Hard 2 and the unspectacular 3. Willis, and notably the writers as well, have come back refreshed and ready to make a real Blockbuster of a movie - and one that is well worth parting with a little cash for. Also on dooyoo, under the same name. ...

Advantages: Action packed from beginning to end, brilliant price. Disadvantages: maybe a little far-fetched for some viewers
This DVD boxset contains all 4 up-to-date DieHard movies. And if you havent seen them all they are brilliant, and the new DieHard4.0 is just that extra step better. It has included several other brilliant actors apart from Bruce Willis himself. And we all know that for DieHard to be good it has to be full of far-fetched moves and actions and this one is the same as the others X10.
It is brilliant having all the DieHardDVD's in this one collection of dvd's, and even at 1st when i got it brand new and only out it was cheap so im sure its about half the original price now. I would recommend people who havent seen them all or have a vague memory of each to watch one a night over 4 days, that is what i done and it really does make you appreciate how good these sort of movies really are.

Yippee-ki-yay! Willis still has the goods. Credit to Wiseman, who keeps the thrills coming, and pass the popcorn (Empire, 24/09/2007)
DVD Description
After a twelve-year hiatus, Bruce Willis is back as New York City detective John McClane, who still plays by his own set of rules. Following DIE HARD (1988), DIE HARD 2 (1990), and DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE (1995), the fourth instalment in the popular action series stars DEADWOOD's Timothy Olyphant as Thomas Gabriel, an evil mastermind who is determined to bring down the entire infrastructure of the United States on Independence Day, sending the country into anarchy and chaos. Joining him on his mission of destruction is the elegant Mai, played by Maggie Q from MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III. McClane becomes involved when he gets caught in the crossfire while transporting prisoner Matt Farrell (Justin Long, IDIOCRACY), a hacker extraordinaire who is the perfect complement to the old-school McClane, who eschews mobile phones, computers, and doing anything the easy way. But when Gabriel kidnaps McClane's daughter, Lucy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, DEATH PROOF), it gets personal. Full of the sarcastic humour, exciting action sequences--including a car flying into a helicopter--and fun characters that have defined the series, DIE HARD 4.0 is an excellent addition, directed by Len Wiseman (UNDERWORLD). The movie also features Kevin Smith as a computer geek known as Warlock, who still lives in his mother's basement.
