Die Hard 2? Remake of the original. Well that was easy, what's next? What's that - you want more? Grrrrr...well...alright.

Waiting to meet his wife at Washington's Dulles airport, Detective John McClane notices something pretty weird going on. Poking his nose into things that he shouldn't McClane discovers a plot to shut the airport down in the middle of the Christmas holiday rush. Led by disgraced soldier Colonel Stuart, a highly trained team of commandos has seized control of the airport's air traffic control system and is running the show, but why would they want to? Money? It seems unlikely but the only possibility until an extradited south American leader comes into the picture - Release the General or the planes circling Dulles start crashing into the ground. Can McClane save the day? Not on his own he can't but luckily the army has despatched a team of anti-terrorist troops to deal with the problem, so all McClane has to do is sit back and let the pro's do their job - fat chance.

To say that this is a remake of the first movie is a bit of a glib statement - it's also wrong. Yes both films share many elements but given the nature of the genre and the success of the first film, the creators have very little option but to stick with the winning formula. Does that make Die Hard 2 a bad film? How does that incorrect noise from Family Fortunes go?

That the first film was such a fabulous hit and that the second sticks closely to the style put in place, means that we have certain expectations - and this film meets and exceeds them almost constantly. Bringing McClane and his 'problems' back underpins the whole film. Like we've been let in a delicious secret, we just know that as soon as we see John boy getting suspicious, something big is going to happen. It's a forewarning that even the film itself uses, in the shape of annoying reporter Sam Coleman.

While the first film had us a knife edge of wondering what was going to happen, in Die Hard 2 we know what's going to happen - we just want to SEE it happen. The film doesn't disappoint on this level and the action is first rate. The stunts are tremendous and there's enough firepower, explosions, and action going on to satiate even the most gung-ho of appetites. But it's not mindless action though and while it may have the odd 'lucky' moment, it generally stays within the realms of reality. There is no overdose of hey-let's-have-a-'cool'-fight-on-top-of-something-stupid moments and while we never come across this kind of thing happening normally (well I never have, but I lead a sheltered life) it never oversteps that invisible line that separates entertainment from stupidity.

The story may gain points for the action but it loses some for lack of originality. This is in no way a criticism as the creators were very much restricted by what had made the first film so great. We already know McClane so we can't really explore that avenue anymore, we already know the friction between Holly and Richard Thornburg so nothing new there. Colonel Stuart is an Ok bad guy but he's nowhere near Hans Gruber and pales a little by comparison. Gruber was charmingly evil while Stuart is that little bit wooden. These are all negatives to a film that very much picks up what happened in the first film and tries to carry on in the same vein. Yes the settings have changed but very little else has.

No-one could fill John McClane's shoes but Bruce Willis and thankfully Willis slots back into one of his most famous roles effortlessly. The same slightly cocky charm of the everyday Joe thrown into the eye of the storm is there in spades and Willis is entertaining throughout. In the action scenes he looks great and while McClane may become a little more superhero than before at times, he still never becomes comic book which would have spelled disaster or the movie. McClane is still vulnerable and streetwise and we love him for it, and it's characters like him that raise the Die Hard series of movies from being cardboard cutout rent-a-hero films into something more complete. Blah, blah, blah.

Bonnie Bedelia, William Atherton, and Reginald VelJohnson all reprise their roles but VelJohnson in particular feels like an enforced nod to the first film. He plays a very tiny role in the film itself but gets fourth billing for what amounts to little more than a cameo. Atherton is just as repugnant as before and therefore great value for money, but Bedelia never appeals to me. Yes she, like the other three leads, brings her role back to life but she doesn't set the screen alight for me.

William Sadler's Colonel Stuart is a poor replacement for Alan Rickman and while Rickman was charming, nasty, and devilishly evil, Sadler ends up being stiff and wooden. Rickman charmed us and we rolled his duplicity around like a rich dark chocolate. Sadler though is brusque and almost cartoon like - not good. John Amos is as likeable as ever, Dennis Franz is as 'jobsworthy' as ever, and on it goes. The casting is pretty much excellent and all of the players are well placed. I especially liked Fred Dalton Thompson but only because he has one of THE most fabulous voices.

Renny Harlin throws action aplenty at the screen but Die Hard 2, while eschewing some of the character build up, does manage to include a nice level of twist and intrigue. The film flows rapidly and when it kicks into gear, you'd better strap yourself in because it's going to be one hell of a rollercoaster. Harlin's handling of the action scenes is excellent and he does a great job in dragging us into McClane's world once more.

The production is splendid and just has that certain something that makes it look substantial and believable. The walls of Dulles airport never look like cardboard or indeed even a movie set, the runway scenes look cold and inhospitable - in short it has that little air of the real. Die Hard had a skyscraper to play with and Die Hard 2 has an airport to play with. Both add realism to what are really over the top situations but the scale that they bring just sets it apart from mindless trash like Tango and Cash.

Some may see it as a rehash of the original film, and while from a certain point of view this is true, do you really want to upset something that works so well? It could have become stale incredibly quickly but there's just enough of the old and the new here to keep us interested. It's entertaining throughout and at the end of the day that's the important thing.

If you want high drama, and exploration of the human soul then you're out of luck here, but that's not what the film sets out to do. It's high octane action and was made when the market still craved the big gun, big muscle heroes of Stallone, Arnie, and co. Action fans will therefore love it.

Non-action fans? Hmmm. It my opinion it falls slightly short of the original Die Hard and even the third film but it's a great film none the less. Yes it's not going to change the world but it is going to have you entertained for a couple of hours, and even in a market as saturated as the action genre, it's certainly in the top third of the table.

If you liked the first film, give it a watch. If you didn't SEE the first film, give it a watch. If you didn't LIKE the first film then you're a girlie puff and should stick to wearing dungarees and watching art house cinema

PS No comments on the DVD extras or anything like that as...I can't be bothered =;)

Very good op, I loved all three films.

No worries about the lack of DVD info, it's not in the DVD section so you're excused. Another top one, I particularly liked the end - 'If you DID see Die Hard and DIDN'T like it, you're a big girlie puff'. Sir Neil, you da man!

I saw this film for the first time a few weeks a go and enjoyed it and even though this rendered your review useless to me, I still enjoyed reading it, Chris.
