This was never going to be as good as Die Hard. That was the original, a breakthrough. Die Hard with a Vengence was the last in the trilogy, and was unique because of this. Die Hard 2 seemed to fill in a gap between the two films, with not really that much to say for itself, too much of the same really. So why did I like it so much?
The basic storyline: it’s a snowy Christmas Eve in Washington DC, terrorists have seized the international airport and thousands of holiday travellers are being held hostage inside their planes which have been told to circle up above. The terrorists are a rebel band of hardened military commandos who have come to rescue a drug lord from justice. They have prepared for everything, except for John McClane (AKA Bruce Willis). New York cop John McClane is waiting meet his wife from one of the planes. It’s a race against time, the fuel is running low for the planes up above, and it's up to McClane not only to save his wife but the other hostages too.
The suspense is well balanced but doesn't have as much as Die Hard. The darkness actually helps the film in a lot of ways, whereas I personally thought it hindered some of the happenings in Die Hard. Ok, so nothing radical happens in Die Hard 2, but it doesn’t stray from the traditions of the action packed genre; and of course it came with a huge bill, it cost $60 million to make! Naturally though, as I hoped I wouldn't see but knew I would, the ending is corny and leaves alot to be desired, and we all knew he was going to save the day anyway.. right?
Don't let this put you off the film however, it may not have the charisma of the other two in the trilogy, but it tries, something that fails in more recent action films.
