Viennese operetta is a fearful genre to get right. It demands great (often coloratura) ... more
voices which can still sparkle with improvisatory freshness, and the whole project has to sound like it was thrown together that afternoon on a whim. It has to fizz like the champagne that so often plays a part in the plot. For the most part, this recording possesses all the right ingredients and mixes them with superb skill. Karajan directs the proceedings with light-hearted precision, and keeps the pace crackling with comic energy. Rita Streich is a fantastic Adele and makes the most of this soubrettish soufflé of a role with a host of silvery voiced coloratura pyrotechnics. She is also an excellent foil to the richer voiced Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, who throws herself into the spirit of things with equal energy. The cons are the laboured German dialogue, given in full, and the casting of a man to sing the mezzo drag role of Orlofsky: but these aside, this account is pure Veuve Cliquot. --Warwick Thompson

Advantages: Suspenseful, compelling Disadvantages: Some bad performances
rather horrible over-acting. I really cringed each time he came on screen; there was much leering and sucking on a stupid pipe like Sherlock Holmes - he really made a mockery of the whole film.
In a lot of ways, this is a great thriller, which is based on a book by Ira Levin (who also wrote Rosemary's Baby and The Stepford Wives). I first watched it about four months ago when it was shown on TV and enjoyed it so much, I bought the DVD. However, there is a real need to suspend disbelief at times. It is just so unlikely that Dory, who is a rich, beautiful young woman, would be able to have a lover that no-one ever saw. As it is, plenty of people saw them together, but the information somehow manages to remain undiscovered until the last minute. However, plenty of films have unrealistic threads in them and, in this case, I think that ...

Advantages: Brucieeee! :-D Disadvantages: Some acting isnt wonderful...
Love this film :-p
And not only because its got a VERY sexy Bruce Willis running around!!!! The film has been on TV alot recently, possibly promoting the new Die Hard 4.0 film, and I was (forced!!) to watch it with my husband, I didn't want to...its not my kind of film, but when we watched it, I found it amazing!!!
Yes some of the acting of the foreign men (Karl), isn't wonderful, but other than that, the film is amazing! The story line is gripping, the characters are played wonderfully by the actors, and theres the right amount of comic factors in there to make it light hearted whilst still been a good action film!
The basic storyline is that of a police agent who goes to see his wife and kids who he lives apart from in new york for christmas, but when he is at the office block she works in, all hell breaks loose and a huge ...
