mission's musical accompaniment has proved altogether more problematic. With Die Another Day, his third score, David Arnold seems to have found the answer. After the dismal techno-rock assault that made The World Is Not Enough just another action blockbuster soundtrack, Arnold--who came to prominence providing the epic strings for Bjork's "Play Dead"--has largely returned to Bond staples, namely the rasping horns and brooding military marches that defined John Barry's classic scores. Yet all real moments of drama are subtly underpinned with futuristic add-ons. As the stunning orchestration of "On the Beach" lowers to a chilling hush, the sense of foreboding is guaranteed by a murmuring electronic pulse. The clattering mechanical beats of "Hovercraft Chase" add frantic urgency as the rallying horn salvos punch out the Bond theme and the bleeps and squelches of "Laser Fight" carry as much suspense as the vintage aquatic strings. This time around Arnold's computer-enhanced atmospheres meld rather than compete with his orchestration. For sure, it's not perfect: the excessive use of choirs is more Star Wars than Bond and Madonna's club-friendly title song lacks the grace and drama to do the opening credits justice. For the most part though, it's a glorious return to form that's as welcome as the return of 007's Aston Martin. --Dan Gennoe

The Plot
Bond liases with South Korean agents to prevent rogue North Korean officer and arms dealer Colonel Moon from starting an all out war between North and South. He kills Moon, but is captured by North Korean guards. More than a year later, he is released in exchange for Zao, Moon's second officer, but suspended while the details of his capture are examined. Breaking free, he goes in search of Zao, and follows him to a an island known for gene therapy, and the trail leads him back to England and the mysterious billionaire businessman Gustav Graves who is funding the creation of a diamond covered satellite capable of becoming a destructive weapon.
The Cast and Performances
Pierce Brosnan's fourth and final outing as James Bond sees the actor taking as more adventurous and action-filled plot by the horns and throwing himself into it. He is very good once more, although he does not seem as into the role as he has done in the three previous Bond films he has made. Toby Stephens is absolutely amazing as Graves, and his on screen presence is overpowering even next to Brosnan, giving the viewer the impression that this is one Bond is not going to win. I am unsure if this was deliberate or not, but it works very well. A big thumbs up to Stephens.
Halle Berry stars as CIA agent Jinx Johnson, and in emerging from the sea in a skimpy and revealing bikini, she imitates the famous scene from Dr No, where Ursula Andress as Honey Rider emerges in a white bikini while Sean Connery as Bond looks on. Berry gives a very good performance here. Rosamund Pike plays Miranda Frost, Graves' fencing partner and P.A., and and there are good performances from Michael Madsen as Falco and Rick Yune as Zao.
Sadly, the death of Desmond Llewelyn in 1999 following a fatal road accident meant that he could not reprise his role as Q. It would have been fitting had he been in the 20th film. John Cleese graduates from R to Q and fills the immense void left by Llewelyn very well, with some typical Q-like comments to Bond. Dame Judi Dench returns as M again, as does Samantha Bond as Miss Moneypenny. The remainder of the cast supports very well.
My Opinion
Die Another Day is a very good film for many different reasons. Toby Stephens is one of them, but the other performances must not be overlooked. As the 20th film on the 40th anniversary, there were references to every single previous Bond film, which are too many to quote here, but can all be found by doing a single google search. I thoroughly enjoyed searching for them, though in the end I had to give up for some and look on the net for them. Some are very quirky, and there are also references to other films, particularly one where Bond tells Q it's just a flesh wound, in reference to Cleese's role in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
I enjoyed the CGI work the Bond film employs, particularly with the novel technology Q and his staff have used to make Bond's car appear invisible, and the scenes in Iceland, although this is something the film was criticised for, and I did feel it was a little over the top in places.
Howevere, this is not a criticism that affected my enjoyment of the film in any way. It is another very good film from the Bond team. Director Lee Tamahori has given us a Bond film that tests Bond to the limits and shows off the beautifully scenic locations very well, providing the right atmosphere throughout the film. The score is equally as good, with the title track sung by Madonna, who also has a brief cameo in the film.
Conclusion
The 20th Bond in the year of the franchise's 40th anniversary gives a very good account of itself.

...anniversary James Bond film - Die Another Day - was released in 2002 to reasonably favourable reviews. Today it is widely regarded to be one of the worst films ever made. Or at least one of the worst James Bond films ever made. Is it as bad as some make out? The answer is yes and no.

Entertaining, technically competent, but lacking focus and that certain something to elevate it above the ordinary. Reviews which might be of interest for "Die Another Day (DVD)"
Advantages: Action, gorgeous women, nice cars Disadvantages: same old save-the-world-from-terrorists
I've seen all the Bond movies since Sean Connery era, not because I'm such a fan, but because there are quite entertaining movies, with beautiful girls, great cars, a lot of action and so on.
"DieAnotherDay" was advertised as the best Bond movie ever, so I thought it might be something special. That's why I've bought the DVD, so I can watch it in the "tranquility" of my Home Theatre Sytem and really enjoy. And, unfortunately, I was a little bit (more) dissapointed with what I've seen. Why? I'll explain it to you as follows:
First of all, the movie starts with Bond being captured by a North Korean army general and tortured for 14 months. Despite the fact he we beaten todeath, he has no bruise, nothing, only a big beard which suggests us he has been in prison for quite a while. It's quite unusual for Bond being captured by enemy ...
. Finally, there's a "Ministry of Propaganda" element that includes Madonna's "DieAnotherDay" music video, the making of her music video, the making of EA's video game "007 Nightfire," some DVD-ROM things, two teaser trailers, one theatrical trailer, and a few TV spots. It's all tied up in a slim-line package, a fancy slipcase, and an informational booklet insert.
Parting Thoughts:
Even mid-tier Bond is better than most other action movies, and "DieAnotherDay" does offer its fair share of excitement. The dreariness of the opening segment is offset by the thrilling later escapades and by Ms. Berry as a thoroughly engaging co-star. I mean, one could be watching another "XXX" or "Transporter" and not having nearly as good a time.
"DieAnotherDay" ends up fulfilling its job as yet another functional if not particularly innovative ...
Advantages: Classic Bond moments in first half of the film. Disadvantages: Gadgets ruin the film, as does John Cleese as Q.
Making a Bond film without any source material can prove to be a tricky exercise to complete, the simple reason is that you have to create everything from scratch. With this recipe for originality you have to also make sure that you don't repeat yourself from previous Bond outings and ensure that the story is punchy and fast moving.
The plot of DieAnotherDay revolves Bond being captured whilst on an undercover mission in Korea, he is held by the Koreans for a total of 14 months. Eventually he gets traded by the British Government for Zao. A terrorist who originally blew Bond's cover which in turn meant 007 was captured. Being held by the British Government as a traitor, Bond escapes and goes on the search for Zao, to discover exactly who betrayed him to the Koreans. What he uncovers is something totally unexpected.

In DIE ANOTHER DAY--the 20th James Bond adventure--007 (Pierce Brosnan) gets off to a rough start when he's captured and subsequently tortured during an assignment in North Korea. When the suave secret agent is eventually liberated, he embarks on a dangerous mission that involves tracking a terrorist named Zao (Rick Yune) to Cuba, where 007 also encounters Jinx (Halle Berry), a highly formidable and alluring fellow spy. Soon Bond is back in England following a mysterious trail that leads to Gustav Graves (Toby Stephens), a flamboyant diamond mogul. After a rather bloody introduction, Graves invites 007 to Iceland, where he plans to unveil his enigmatic Icarus project. Before long, Bond and Jinx are reunited and battling Graves, Zao, and other villains bent on world domination. With this Bond instalment, directed by Lee Tamahori, 007 catches up with the 21st century and the results are grittier and more explosive than ever before. Although it begins as one of the darkest and most violent Bond films, the intense mood of DIE ANOTHER DAY is also counterbalanced by typically clever and funny moments. Brosnan is in fine form as the iconic hero, while Berry shines as the immediately likeable Jinx. Stephens and Yune are excellent as the two main bad guys, and the rest of the cast--including Judi Dench, John Cleese, Rosamund Pike, and Michael Madsen--provide key supporting roles. With its hi-tech gadgets and special-effects-laden set pieces, DIE ANOTHER DAY clearly has its eye on the future, but in numerous scenes it also lovingly embraces the past, placing the film in the upper tier of Bond movies.
