I’ve always believed that if something seems too good to be true, then unfortunately it most likely probably is - Devil’s Advocate is a film that proves this only too well.....
Devil’s Advocate
Keanu Reeves plays the part of Kevin Lomax, a very successful defence attorney who has never lost a case in his entire career.
The film starts with Kevin defending a schoolteacher who has been accused by one of his pupils of molesting her. During the trial, Kevin comes to believe his client is guilty, (which he clearly is) however this doesn’t stop him from destroying the girl's credibility and getting Mr Getty off.
After the trial Kevin and his wife, Mary Ann , played by Charlize Theron, go out on the town to celebrate, yet another win. Whilst enjoying their celebrations, Kevin is approached by a representative of the New York based law firm of Milton, Chadwick & Waters. He offers Kevin a large sum of money to help the firm with jury selection. This is an offer of course that Kevin can't refuse and so he accepts the very kind offer.
After his selected jury results in a not guilty verdict, John Milton, played by Al Pacino, invites him to join Milton, Chadwick & Waters, offering a large salary and a swanky apartment. How can Kevin refuse such an offer?
Kevin joins the film and keeps up his 100% winning record.
Eddie Barzoon the firm's managing attorney, thinks that Kevin is competing for his job after finding Kevin's name in the company papers as a partner. Kevin claims that he does not know anything about it.
Kevin approaches Milton and tells him about the situation with Eddie and Milton tells him ‘not to worry’. While Eddie is out jogging in Central Park, he is beaten to death by two vagrants, who take on 'demonic' appearances during the murder.
Things certainly aren’t as they first appeared and it isn’t too long before we discover who the real John Milton really is!

My Opinion
I have never really rated Keanu Reeves as an actor and he does nothing to change my mind in this film. However Al Pacino is as amazing as ever and really makes up for everything else.
It’s one of those films where you, the viewer know what’s coming, but the leading man doesn’t, so I did find myself shouting at the TV trying to warn him!! (I get carried away sometimes).
The film has a good story line (although don’t take it too seriously) and to say its just over two hours long, the time does seem to fly by.
As I say Keanu Reeves really didn't do much for me, but there are some great performances by Al Pacino and Charlize Theron.
Overall a very entertaining film and well worth a watch.
