Sanjay Leela Bhansali's epic film is a remake, a film based on a very renowned Bengali novel under the same name. This is one of the most famous indian love stories, a tragic love story with 3 central characters.
Devdas is a young man who has recently returned from abroad after finishing his studies. He is madly in love with Paro, his childhood sweetheart and neighbour. Due to differences in family stature, Dev's dad doesn't allow him to marry Paro who is finally married to a rich businessman. A heartbroken devdas seeks comfort in alchohol and lands up in a brothel(though it is shown with utmost dignity here) where he goes regularly to see Chandramukhi's dance. What follows is a tragic story of a young man losing himself to alchohol and finding some love and affection from the dancer. This is a difficult film to make and Sanjay Leela Bhansali makes it in the most grandest of ways.
It is the complexities and nuances of the characters that make Devdas what it is. But the sheer fact that the characters have been seen before on screen does reduce its impact on the audience. All the three characters are played finely by the actors, Madhuri dixit taking the spotlight with a memorable act. THe climax of the film will remain with you forever and i won't be surprised if you are in tears. Art direction and costumes deserve a special mention, so does the music director Ismail darbar who recreates the era.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a master filmmaker and he shows his talent here(though i wish he made something more original)
