I will not give you the rest of the movie lest to say there are the usual explosions, double crosses, a love interest and not so good special effects. Well it was 1950.

Unfortunately the public didn’t want the science all they wanted was the adventure and on that point the film falls into the dreaded ‘B’ movie genre.
The film follows Charles Cargraves, a kind of Howard Hughes of his day, as he struggles to get his spaceship off of the launch pad and to the Moon. However for Charles the space races really is on and the Russians are prepared to play dirty. After several successful sabotage attempts on his rockets Charles goes for the “sneaky hide the spaceship until it’s ready to launch” ploy! It is of course very easy to hide something that big, not.
Charles gets lots of big firms and their bosses on board by showing them a by now famous or should that be infamous ‘Woody Woodpecker cartoon’. It explained is very simplistic terms take off, space, the Moon, and Gravity. The big wigs all get on board, only financially that is and Destination Moon is good to go.

The science in the film is awfully dated and quite quirky and innocent looking. The plot is fairly decent but the dialogue at times is awful and corny. It was I believe nominated for an ‘Oscar’ for its special effects, blimey they must have been desperate in those days.
It really is a ‘B’ movie but enjoyable none the less, catch it if it comes on the TV but otherwise don’t go out of your way.

This early science fiction film from Producer George Pal (War Of The Worlds, When Worlds Collide, Time Machine) is fantastic. Using only the best technical special effects at the time, made this film one of the best science fiction films around. Using Technicolor and techniques using matte and scene paintings created by the noted astronomical artist Chesley Bonestell, won this film an Oscar for best special effects and best adventure (Berlin International ... ...nominated for two other awards. The use of Matte and scene paintings gave this film a quality feel to it. The same techniques were used in the above films and such films as The Forbidden Planet etc. Adapted from the novel by Robert A Heinlein - Rocketship Galileo, and was thought to be the father of the 50's sci-fi era, starting off the film genre in a dramatic way. War Of The Worlds and When Worlds Collide were all done after this film, and followed ...

Getting to the moon before the Russians and building a base is the general plot line but the film delivers so much more.
Charles Cargraves is a rocket engineer who believes his last rocket was sabotaged so he goes private and soon he has built his second rocket which he gets to the moon.
Along the way the saboteurs will try again, he will fight the red tape but will win through.
The movie won an Oscar in 1951 ... ...been forgotten. The science in the movie is actually very accurate apart from the nuclear propulsion, but otherwise it is quite a factual film. We are facts such as the problems of G force, Airlocks, weightlessness nd the Moons gravity being 1/6th that of Earth.
The acting is good and it is shot in glorious Technicolor.
Classed as a 'B' movie does this film an injustice it really is worth watching and enjoying. ...
