television's hottest prime-time soap. We learn this within the first few minutes of the DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES pilot episode, when seemingly sane and happy housewife Mary Alice Young removes a revolver from a drawer and shoots herself in the head. In the process of trying to make sense of her sudden and inexplicable suicide, Mary Alice's friends end up revealing just as many secrets about themselves and their neighbours as they do about her past. Each episode follows the ups and downs in the lives of bored trophy wife Gabrielle Solis (Eva Longoria), klutzy-yet-charming Susan Mayer (Teri Hatcher), frustrated stay-at-home-mom Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman), anal-retentive homemaker Bree Van de Kamp (Marcia Cross) and man-eater Edie (Nicollette Sheridan). Throughout the 5 series, each woman faces her fair share of drama and does her part in helping to uncover a string of mysteries that go deeper than anyone can imagine. The fifth series sees events flash forward five years, revealing the mysteries of the intervening years through clever flashbacks.

I watched the first episode of Desperate Housewives because I had seen a write up on the program in my TV page and I have to say it appealed to me. However, because the programme was shown on Wednesdays, I didn't get to see every episode so I was delighted to find that I had been given Series one on DVD by my parents for Christmas.
Packaging This DVD set comes in a white case with a picture of the desperate housewives on the front. The characters are dressed in white and look stunning in the pictures. The title is written above their picture in red writing. Inside the case are 6 separate DVDs containing the 22 episodes from the 1st series.
Price This was bought for me as a present but I have done a bit of research and this DVD would cost you £24.99 on play.com and on amazon it would cost you £23. You can get this box set cheaper from the 'new and used' section on both of the above websites.
Storyline I don't want to give too much away about the plot of what happens in Desperate Housewives and to be honest, there is so much going on in every episode that it would be difficult to detail it all in a review anyway.
There are 5 main 'Desperate Housewives' who all live on Wisteria Lane which from the outside, looks like a very prefect place to live.
In the 1st episode we met Mary-Alice Young who narrates throughout the whole series. Mary-Alice Young appeared to lead a perfect life, that is, until one day, she is found dead in her own house and appears to have shot herself in the head. The Desperate Housewives start to question exactly what was wrong in Mary-Alice's life for her to end it. Throughout the serious, the desperate housewives discover various things which make them question the truth about the death of their friend.
As well as the above continued theme in the series, you also get to learn about the past and present lives of the desperate housewives as well as meeting a few new faces that have moved to Wisteria Lane.
I will stop here as saying much more than this will begin to give away parts of the storyline. However with each explanation of the characters, I will include parts of the storyline that are relevant to each character - hopefully without giving away too much of the storyline.
Characters
Susan Mayer (played by Teri Hatcher) Susan is a single Mum to her daughter Julie, who to be honest often acts like the mother herself. Susan is extremely scatty and has a very close relationship with her daughter, almost to the point where they seem more like best friends than mother and daughter. However, bearing in mind that Julie is only 13, the viewer is left wondering if Susan should try and sort out her own problems rather than getting her teenage daughter to help her all the time. Susan's husband left her and Julie a couple of years ago and although sad at her failed marriage, Susan is always on the look out for new love and definitely believes in 'Happy Ever After'. Throughout the 1st series, it becomes obvious that Susan has feelings for Mike, a new face that moves to Wisteria Lane and you get to see if their relationship will develop or not.
Gabrielle Solis (played by Eva Longoria) Gabrielle is beautiful and on the surface it looks like she has everything a woman could want - a rich husband, a big house - but we soon start to see that not everything is perfect for Gabrielle. Gabrielle enjoys spending her husbands hard earning money and keeping fit. We also see her enjoying a full blown affair with her and her husbands 17 year old gardener.
Lynette Scavo (played by Felicity Huffman) This woman is a god, she has 4 children, all under the age of 5 and all quite misbehaved. Her husband works away from home a lot so she is left to look after the children for most of her time. Out of all the housewives, Lynette definitely seems to have the most solid marriage, her and Tom (her husband) seem truly devoted to one another and their children. Lynette used to be a high flying woman in the advertising industry but gave it all up to raise her children while her husband became the main bread winner. You can see at times that it almost seems as it she regrets that decision as she really did enjoy her work and bringing up 4 children under the age of five certainly proves to be hard work.
Bree Van Der Kamp (played by Marcia Cross) Bree is a bit of a clean freak. She worries constantly about how other people perceive her and her family and if even the family run into problems, she believes that as long as her lawn looks nice and her windows are clean, people wont suspect a thing. Bree is married to Rex and assumes their relationship is rock solid but it soon becomes apparent that Rex wants a divorce and her 2 teenage children are starting t o rebel. Bree is extremely prim and proper and she would hate to think that people in her neighbourhood know what is going on in her personal life. While struggling to keep her family together and also dealing with her own emotions, she still feels the need to give the impression to the rest of the neighbourhood that everything is perfect in the Van Der Kamp household.
Edie Britt (played by Nicolette Sheridan) Edie Brit is the bitch of Wisteria Lane. She is blonde, with blue eyes and big boobs and often likes to walk around the neighbourhood with her legs and cleavage on show. Although she is tolerated by all the other housewives, she is not part of the close knit group that the above characters belong to. It is quite obvious that Susan and Edie have a lot of history and are sarcastically friendly to one another which is very amusing to watch. Edie and Susan both take a shine to Mike in this series as are often fighting for his attentions.
Summary Personally I love Desperate Housewives. Even my boyfriend and my male friend like it. It is full of gripping storylines and quite often there are several explosive stories happening in unison so there is never a moment to get bored. I always feel that every episode leaves you wishing you knew what was going to happen next.
You grow to love and hate the characters you meet throughout the series. Every housewife has an extremely different personality and it is interesting to watch people who are so different actually forming a really great friendship together.
Along with the gripping storylines, there are also quite a few yummy men in the show. Lynette's husband Tom is quite dishy and most people have heard of Jesse Metcalfe (who plays Gabrielle's 17 year old lover!!) who is also very nice to look at.
The best thing about having the DVD box set is that you can watch all the episodes back to back (if you have the time) and you can also watch them in sequence (when I watched the serious on TV, I quite often missed weeks due to being at work and then found it difficult to catch up on what was happening the following week)
Advantages: Brilliantly written, directed, casted, costumed and with a great story! Disadvantages: You may not get much else done until you have watched it all!
Seeing Desperate Housewives advertised on tv for the past few years, it has always appealed to me but having to get up early for work, it was always on way past my bedtime (some ridiculous hour like 10:30pm or some other obscure time that surely no other 25 year old would be awake for!) so I very rarely got to see it.
My boyfriend always raved about it (he said he thought the plot of the show was good but I'm thinking it may have more to do with ... ...In a nut shell though, Desperate Housewives tells the tale of life on Wisteria Lane in Suburban Fairview. The houses are large and exquisite, the gardens perfect and the people beautiful and rich - what could be better? Well, as you find out in the first episode, life is not as great as it seems on Wisteria Lane. Everybody has secrets and how much do you really want to know about your Neighbours?.

From the day I saw the adverts for this, I knew I wanted to watch it. I mean hell! It had man candy in it! (still does actually) I was impressed from the get go to tell the truth. This dark comedy drama starts with a shocker, within the first five minutes we get to see someone shoot herself in the head. From then on the show has managed to build and maintain a level of humour, curiosity and drama that I've never witnessed all in the same room.

The Desperate Housewives DVD Season 1, I think, makes the perfect gift for the lady in your life as just about every personality is represented by the ladies on Wisteria Lane.

DVD Description
All is not as it seems on Wisteria Lane, the pristinely manicured suburban setting of television's hottest prime-time soap. Narrated by the spirit of Mary Alice, each episode follows the ups and downs in the lives of bored trophy wife Gabrielle Solis (Eva Longoria), klutzy-yet-charming Susan Mayer (Teri Hatcher), frustrated stay-at-home-mom Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman), and anal-retentive homemaker Bree Van de Kamp (Marcia Cross). As love-struck Susan competes for the attention of new neighbour Mike Delfino (James Denton) with neighbourhood seductress Edie Britt (Nicollette Sheridan), Gabrielle takes a liking to her hunky 17-year-old gardener. Meanwhile, Bree attempts to fix her life's problems through obsessive housecleaning, and Lynette struggles to control her children while at the same time keeping her sanity. Throughout the course of the show's wildly popular debut season, each woman faces her fair share of drama and does her part in helping to uncover a mystery that goes deeper than anyone can imagine.
