I am actually quite shocked that this will be the first review on this DVD, this also makes me weary as this will be the sole review (at least for now) people are going to read, lots of pressure!! Oh well, hopefully I do it justice.
For anyone who doesn't know who Derren Brown is, here is a quote from his official website
"Derren Brown is a unique force in the world of illusion - he can seemingly predict and control human behaviour.
He doesn't claim to be a mind-reader, instead he describes his craft as a mixture of magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship.
Whatever you choose to call it, his unparalleled performances amaze and unsettle all those who watch him. This is a powerful and provocative form of entertainment, unlikely to be imitated for a long while."
I only watched this DVD last night although it has been out for some time now (Read my review on his live performance to find out why I only seen it recently) And like his live show, I was blown away.
I would suggest to people that have seen this DVD or indeed his television work from which it is based, and think that the people involved are obviously actors or let in on something or something, go and see his live show, it is genuine.
DVD MENU
The menu system on the DVD is overall, brilliant, very good effects used without going overboard with long delays with pointless in menu cut scenes. The one problem I did find was on the special features in one of the sections, the commentary was the automatic selection and you had to change this before watching, aside from that excellent.
DVD CASE
A decent front cover I guess, although I have never really liked Channel 4 covers (Sounds stupid but everything I can think of didn't overly appeal to me) The back of the box has some decent information on it, nothing out of this world, but good and informative.
CONTENT
I hadn't seen the channel 4 series he did, so all of the content was new to me and completly blew me away, I would assume however that anyone who had followed all of his shows would not find anything too out of this world about this DVD. Like I said in the disadvantages, perhaps it is a little too short, I know it was a "best bits" type of DVD but they could have squeezed a little more into it I feel. (The run-time from memory was approx 74 minutes)
Some of the best bits in the DVD for me included...
Making people forget what station that were getting off at on a tube. (you can work out how he does this one, think about it)
Collecting winnings at a dog track by giving the chashier a losing ticket (this will really blow your mind)
EXTRA FEATURES
Very good selection of extras, including bits cut out from his C4 show, interviews, and explainations of how he does some of his stuff, very interesting and entertaining.
OVERALL IMPRESSION
A well made DVD showing some shear brilliant work, well worth a look.
roduction to the considerable skills of the only living Jedi Master. His show,Mind Controldebuted on Channel 4 in the wake of a resurgence of interest in magic spearheaded...
