Unless you've been living in a cave for the past four years, you should have at least a vague idea who Derek Acorah is. In the event that you have been in a cave or have only just discovered television - Derek Acorah is Britain's best known Psychic Medium. In short, he has a spirit guide called Sam whom he gets information from i.e. names, dates, events etc.
The sceptics are all around arguing the case against Derek. There are those who simply don't believe in mediumship, and others who do but doubt the credentials of a show pressured by the battle for TV ratings and viewing figures.
However, this show just may change your mind.....
The idea behind this series is for Derek and a team of sidekicks to visit allegedly Haunted towns throughout the country, talking with locals and helping them to be rid of unwanted spirits etc. Along the way, Derek, Daniella Westbrook (of Eastenders fame) and Angus Purden (he always screams like a girl!) come across poltergeist activity and no end of spirits who try to physically possess Derek Acorah. It's up to the viewer to make up his or her mind as to the outcomes and their believability.
The most convincing part of the show has to be the Doorstep Divinations. Derek is drawn psychically to a building and asks to enter to give a reading to the occupants. The readings are usually spot-on and you can see the very visible shock and amazement of the members of the public as he comes out with messages from beyond the grave.
Derek seems uncomfortable with the new format at first, having worked for 4 years on Living TV's Most Haunted. However, he soon settles in and becomes more settled as the Host of his own series.
If I had to find a downside to this show, it would have to be the lack of time spent at each location. Instead of rushing through each area in 10 minutes, it would be better to investigate only 2 locations per episode (25-30 mins per location) so that we can at least learn a little more about where the team are visiting, and what ghosts are supposed to lurk in them. We could also have done with more than 2 episodes, being that as for a similar price - a Most Haunted DVD will give you around 6 or 7. More on Volume 2 please !
If you chose to buy this DVD, you'd be entertained and I think that is the most important thing to cosnider when making a buying decision. Whether being entertained is enough, or you are wanting good hard solid evidence of the paranormal is up to you to decide.
EXTRAS ------------ There is a documentary called Ghost Towns Revealed for each of the 2 episodes on the disc. This focuses on the behind the scenes events, and some unseen footage of the investigations. It's worth a look and feels a lot more voyeuristic than the show itself.
The truth is out there........and Derek just might find it in Ghost Towns!!!
