Can Charles find a way out of this nightmare before his wife finds out what is going on?
Clive Owen plays Charles Schine. Although not an actor I am terribly familiar with, I thought he was good as Charles. It is hard to feel much sympathy for a man who openly cheats on his wife, and Owen didn't overplay this, but he still didn't deserve what happened to him. Then towards the end of the film, his role suddenly changes and isn't so in keeping with what I had come to expect of him. This is a little strange, but I think it has more to do with the plot and the way it is portrayed than it does to do with Owen as an actor.
For Jennifer Aniston, who plays Lucinda, this is a role very unlike the Friends character that we have all come to know her for - there is no ditzy Rachel here. I thought she was very convincing in the role - not once did I think of Rachel, although not much attempt was made to make her look any different. I've read a lot of criticism of Aniston as an actress, but I have to say that although she may not be the most talented actress out there, she is a lot better than many and I enjoyed watching her in this film. Her scenes after the rape are particularly good.
Vincent Cassel gave a good performance as LaRoche - at least, I was impressed by the change from pleasant guy to psychopath. He did make a good villain, although it was nothing to get overly excited about. I also enjoyed seeing Tom Conti, who played Charles' boss - it was a shame he didn't have more of a chance to shine - it's been a while since I've seen him in anything.
I have read a lot of criticism of this film - the main reason being that the twist in the tale is too obvious. Maybe I'm stupid, but I didn't see it coming (luckily none of the reviews I read gave the twist away!). In hindsight, I probably could have worked it out - certainly now I've seen it, it does seem obvious. Nevertheless, I liked the twist - it may not be original, but it certainly made me sit up and take note and without it, the film would have been no better than a Friday afternoon thriller on Channel Five.
For a thriller, I thought the pacing of the film was good - at least, I never got really bored, although there was one point when Charles is panicking about paying off LaRoche and I thought it was strung out for too long. I also thought that the director kept a good level of control over the story - it would have been easy for Charles to become a superhero, but he doesn't (apart from right at the end) - he very much remains an everyday sort of bloke, albeit one that doesn't have many friends he can trust. What I wasn't so keen on was the final, secondary twist that came right at the end. I felt that by that point, the film had been done and dusted, so it was just an extra that wasn't really necessary.
There a rating of 15 for this film, which I think is warranted, because there is a lot of violence and some sexual scenes, although they aren't particularly graphic.
This film isn't flawless - there are any number of plot threads that in retrospect are questionable - but it wasn't until after the film that these came to the fore. While I was watching, I was completely drawn into the film, and that, for me, is the important thing. I doubt I will go out of my way to watch the film again, but I certainly enjoyed it while it was on and think that most fans of mindless thrillers will enjoy it too. Recommended.
Advantages: Entertaining thriller, some good performances Disadvantages: Flawed, over long, one too many twists

...demands twenty thousand dollars…..
Derailed had the potential to be a really good little thriller with a good story, some interesting twists and a few bits of good dialogue - but it settles for being a tiresome, bumbling and slow rehash of many other, better movies. The flat script renders all of the twist and turns redundant and by the ending you will be so bored by it all that you won't care what happens to any of the badly drawn characters and ... ...the successful beginning. Derailed would have been better as a short - with 60 minutes the crew could of made a quick, dark and intriguing film with a killer twist, but to make it a feature length the script has nowhere to go but to make all the characters ridiculously stupid. I don't just mean stupid, I mean stooooooopid. Everything that Charles does is idiotic every decision the worst he could possibly make and he seems to have no idea how to live ...

When bored advertising executive Charles finds himself without a train ticket, he is helped out by attractive stranger Lucinda. Both are looking for distraction from their unfulfilling marriages. In fact it feels substandard. It uses the now over-familiar device of the circular narrative (starting at the end and working its way back from the beginning) to tell the story. It's trying to be a modern noir with the femme fatale, thug and man in the wrong place motifs. But the director doesn't spend enough time building up the characters and their relationships ...

Derailed is a thriller based on a book written by James Siegel of the same name. The film isn’t to be confused with Jean-Claude Van Damme’s film of the same name released in 2002. Derailed didn’t exactly do well at the box office, well, that’s a bit of an understatement. Derailed was mauled by over 80% of critics. The film is rated 15 and runs for approximately 106 minutes. Derailed was made on a budget of $22,000,000 and grossed an estimated $57,479,076 ... ...point in watching again, however Derailed is different, it’s something that really captured my attention and even though I know the outcome it’s still an enjoyable film for me to watch every so often. As soon as I saw this film advertised I had high hopes for it. I’m a big fan of thrillers and this one had a brilliant cast which included one of my favourite actresses so I was looking forward to seeing it. One thing that did bother me a little was ...

Coming off the series finale of FRIENDS, Jennifer Aniston sets out to prove herself a serious actress with DERAILED, a tense thriller that is anything but funny. While the film gives most of its screen time to Clive Owen, Aniston proves, as in THE GOOD GIRL, that she is capable of pulling off a dramatic role. Meeting on a commuter train one morning in Chicago, ad executive Charles (Owen) and financial analyst Lucinda (Aniston) have an immediate connection. Worn down by his job, strained marriage, and a sick child, Charles finds himself drawn to the escape Lucinda can offer. A lunch meeting, followed by dinner and drinks, leads the way to a rendezvous in a sleazy motel, where no sooner have the adulterous lovebirds ripped each other's clothes off than a sadistic thief (Vincent Cassel) breaks into the room and puts them through hours of nightmarish horror. Because of their relationship's illicit nature, the two are unable to go to the cops, and are thus virtually powerless to their attacker's every whim, leaving themselves open to blackmail as he threatens their families and lives. Choosing momentary gratification and the excitement of the unknown over the values he generally holds dear, Charles more than pays the price for his indiscretion. Playing off his audience's greatest fears, director Mikael Hafstrom creates some scenes so horrific they are sure to haunt viewers for hours after the credits roll. A morality tale of sorts, DERAILED explores the terrible effects of lying and infidelity, while the film's most powerful scenes leave viewers with the paranoid feeling that the only person you can trust is yourself.
