A Rosette for this ravishing Rosenkavalier

Advantages: Great cast, conductor and orchestra, top notch production
Disadvantages: None, to be honest

've always been an advocate of having singers who can "act" properly and one of the main reasons why this is my top DVD choice for "Der Rosenkavalier" is that the acting quality is undeniably first rate. I have to say that my favourite character is Kurt Moll as Baron Ochs. He treads that fine line between good acting and caricature perfectly. You cringe at Ochs' antics as the bachelor male relative from Hell, yet he doesn't go so far as to make himself unlikeable. At the end you are compelled to feel a little sympathy for him as he is humiliated in the inn by Mariandel/Octavian and her collaborators, and I think that's what Richard Strauss would have intended. In an opera where interaction between the characters is so vital, I especially like the way in which TV director Horant Hohlfeld has successfully managed the difficult balance ...

Top Quality Opera for All

Advantages: Beautifully produced, top quality singing
Disadvantages: None

As an aspiring opera singer I am keen to get to see as much opera as I possibly can and to get the best experience I can for the least amount of money possible! The Royal Opera House is almost certainly the most well known opera house in Britain and I look forward to every production I see there, knowing that it will be a real treat for the ears and the eyes! - Booking tickets - First things first, how to book tickets. You may be under the impression that tickets for the opera are hugely expensive and yes, for certain seats they are - for the big Wagnerian productions the best seats will go for upwards of £200! However, seats in the Ampitheatre are far more reasonably priced (around £22-30) and if you're willing to stand then tickets can be as low as £5 (I stood last weekend and it's really not as bad as it sounds, in fact the view ...

Review of Royal Opera House London

The Opera House

Advantages: Wasn't expensive
Disadvantages: Hour tour wasn't long enough

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE Sydney Opera house is located on the eastern headland of Circular Quay just a few minutes from the train station. It is made up of 1,056,000 Swedish tiles on the roof, which are off white and are self-cleaning. Construction began in 1959 after a Danish architect Jorn Utzon won an international design competition for the $7 million building. In 1966 Utzon quit after political interference leaving Australian architects to design the interior costing $102million. He has never seen the building completed. Utzon who is now in his eighties has announced to refurbish the interior and he has high hopes that it will be full of colour rather than a black hole. His son comes to Australia to oversee any developments. It was finally was completed against all odds and after several disagreements in 1973. It now is one ...
