In 1993, Warner Brothers drafted in director Marco Bambilla to take the helm and make a futuristic action film set in 2032, named Demolition Man. The result was a smashing film, with favoured Sly Stallone as a no nonsense cop pitted against crime lord Wesley Snipes. The film did relatively well at the box office, and it's always a good film to watch if you're in the mood for a no brain action film with a bit of a twist!
The film starts off in 1996 ( at the time this was 3 years in the future!), and shows a face off between risk-taking John Spartan (Stallone) trying to capture crime lord Simon Phoenix (Snipes). Following the successful capture, the authorities decide that Spartan's methods were unacceptable, and he and Phoenix are both cryogenically frozen. Fast forward to 2032, and Los Angeles has changed: now known as San Angeles, technology has advanced and the law is much stricter, fining people for swearing and with automated criminal detection devices everywhere. Phoenix escapes, and, faced with an unfamiliar villain with old styles of criminality, the only thing to do is fight the old with the old, and release Spartan to capture Phoenix once more.
As you can imagine, the film merely serves as a vehicle to show off the action talents of Stallone and Snipes. The actors cope very well as characters struglling to cope with the future, and they are joined by a more than capable cast, most notably Sandra Bullock as Huxley, and Nigel Hawthorne as Dr Raymond Cocteau. The remainder of the cast do well, particularly Benjamin Bratt and an on form Denis Leary.
In terms of plot, this is quite solid for a 90s action film. The majority of them merely serve to give a bit of adventure, but this one actually has a decent twist to it. Snipes and Stallone are a perfect pairing as hero and villain, and some of the futuristic props are incredibly creative and surprisingly believable, such as 'three little shells' for toilet paper, which confuses Spartan sufficiently to have to resort to other methods.
The film isn't without its faults. It does drag in places, which is surprising for an action film of the 1990s. There is the expected cheese, with Phoenix wandering round saying 'Simon says....' and cliches left right and centre. Jackie Chan was originally offered the role of Phoenix, and despite not taking the role on, he still gets a mention in the film, as does Arnie. Finally, a little more trivia: the film has elements of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, and the film's roots in this novel is shown by the naming of Sandra Bullock's character Lieutenant Huxley.
All in all, this is a very well made film. It is widely considered one of the best action films of 1993, despite the releases of such top films as Jurassic Park and The Fugitive, and its high profile cast and a solid marketing push at its time of release certainly helped. The film is a favourite of mine, and it never ceases to entertain me.
