In 1993, a certain Mr Stallone made a movie which, in my opinion, is right up with the Rocky films as his best role.
Set in 1996, 3 years in the future from when it was made, the world has crumbled around people and criminals are running cities. One of the most persistent offender is Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes). After kidnapping a bus load of people and keeping them hostage in an old warehouse, John Spartan (Sly Stallone) turns up to save the day. He has been chasing Phoenix for years and this is his chance to finally catch him. Phoenix is soon caught but due to the vast amount of damage caused by Phoenix and Spartan, they are both cryogenically frozen for foreseeable future.
Fast forward 36 years to 2032. The whole world has changed drastically and no longer is there violent crime and danger. LA no longer exists and they are now in San Angeles (the cities of San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco decide to become one big city after an earthquake). Society is now full of law abiding citizens who are even fined if they swear and police who aren't trained to deal with violence. Phoenix is thawed out in order to have his parole hearing but he soon manages to escape and goes on a rampage throughout the city.
They decide that the only way to catch Phoenix again is to thaw out John Spartan. However, Spartan finds it very strange adapting to this new world and wants to go back to the old way of doing things. He then embarks on his chase for Phoenix with the assist of Lieutenant Lenina Huxley (Sandra Bullock) who is still stuck in the 1990's (and her office is like a shrine to the decade) and who also idolizes Spartan. What then follows is a flurry of fight scenes, rude phrases and some very catchy one liners until Spartan and Phoenix come head to head for the final battle.
This film is a very typical Stallone film. He plays the normal meathead role who likes to do things the violent way to get what he wants. However, he is well complimented by Bullock who provides his opposite and so the two go together well. There is a great deal of action in this film as you would expect but there are plenty of times where there is some comic relief from it.
The plot of the film isn't the strongest part but it is certainly acceptable and at certain times you will find yourself unable to stop watching it.
Stallone plays John Spartan well. Bless him, he's not the best actor in the world so it can be a bit painful to see him do scenes where he plays anything other than an action man but he manages to pull it off satisfactorily in this film. Snipes is brilliant in his role as the very arrogant bad guy. Bullock also keeps to her high standard of acting and is a wonderful supporting actor who offers more of the comedic elements of the film.
I really like this film. It is a perfect film if you just want to sit in and watch a no brainer. As usual the whole image of what people expect the world to be like in the future is far from fact but it just gives you something to laugh at. I would certainly recommend the film to all.
