Review: [A] brilliant and psychologically transfixing documentary....DELIVER US FROM EVIL shows us how the business of saving souls can rationalize the obscenity of selling them (Entertainment Weekly, 15/11/2007)
Advantages: Watchble Horror Disadvantages: not long enough
...When saw this film last week, and in particular the built up from the trailers, I thought it might be one of those typical ‘deliverusfromevil’ stories straight out of the Halloween meets Exorcist genre. But it isn’t, it is quite watchable, okay it bears some of the Exorcist hallmarks but has a strong supernatural storyline that is both pacy and thrilling. The film is only 90 minutes so it tries to cram the character and story development in very quickly and I think it succeeds in the endeavour.
The basic story is that Maya Larkin played by Winona Ryder, belongs to a group of exorcists and during a very messy exorcism, she stumbles upon a conspiracy that could bring Satan to Earth. As she investigates further it transpires that Satan will arrive in the shape of a prominent trial analyst played by Ben Chaplin...

Advantages: Improves on the original is nearly everyway. Bruce Campbell is the man!. A trumendous blend of genres. Disadvantages: Your mother might not like it...
...is that this is indeed a sequel but because Raimi couldn't get the right's to show a re-cap of the first film he shot a simplified 5 minute version of the whole of the first movie and stuck it at the front of this one. Instead of Ash (Campbell) and his 3 friend's, it's just him and his girlfriend Laura who show up at the start of the film. Laura is possessed and attacks Ash, he chops off her head, buries her and is then chased and hit by an evil force, it's this point where part one ends and two begins.
You can probably tell from my description of the first few scene's that EVIL DEAD 2 moves at an amazing pace, in fact that's probably an understatement. Yet again brimming with invention and nifty camera moves while at literally every moment throwing pure brilliance in your face, people use the words "roller coaster" all too often when describing films...

Advantages: At times very emotional Disadvantages: I feel the documentary fails to highlight the impact strongly enough
...DeliverUsFromEvil is a highly acclaimed documentary charting 30 years in the life of Father Oliver O'Grady, an Irish man who moved to California to become a priest. While in California Oliver became a good friend to members of his many flocks across the California area; with each new parish he met new friends, these friends added Oliver to their family like their own flesh and blood. Oliver selflessly looked after these people, taking real interest in each family, loving them like they were his real family. But beneath this warm loving exterior Oliver hid a vicious secret, as did the Roman Catholic Church, for 30 years the church covered up that Oliver was a vicious, unforgiving paedophile who left victims behind each time he moved to a new church. While the people in the communities all strong Catholics were convinced to not push...
