Déjà vu is a science fiction film that was released 22nd November 2006. It did amazingly well at the box office, grossing an estimated $180,557,550 at the box office on a budget of $75,000,000. The film is rated 12 & runs for approximately 126 minutes. Déjà vu received mixed reviews.
Déjà vu is the masterpiece from the superstar team of Tony Scott & Jerry Bruckheimer. Tony Scott being, the younger brother Of Ridley Scott has directed many amazing films including: The Last Boy Scout, Top Gun, True Romance & one of my favourite Will Smith films Enemy Of The State. Jerry Bruckheimer is the producer of this film, he’s just as accomplished as Tony Scott and has worked on films including: Confessions Of A Shopaholic, Pirates Of The Caribbean, Black Hawk Down, Enemy Of The State, Coyote Ugly & Con Air. With two such accomplished film makers this was bound to be a huge hit.
The star of Déjà Vu is of course Denzel Washington, he happens to be one of my favourite actors. He’s appeared in: Training Day, Inside Man & American Gangster.
Special Agent Douglas Carlin is an office fronting an investigation into the explosion on a boat full of Navy men & their children, the investigation seems pretty normal and he has a couple of leads to follow up. Doug tells his fellow officers about the evidence he’s picked up & they inform him of something that could be of significance to the investigation, there was a body of a woman in her 20’s pulled out of the river, which is no surprise at first as there were lots of women killed in the explosion, only thing is her body was there before the explosion. This could just be a coincidence but Doug thinks that the case needs investigating in more detail so he makes it his duty to find out what happened to her.
Doug is asked
if he would like to join a new government project where detectives are using satellites in the sky to reverse time, the only trouble is, is that they can record but they can’t rewind or fast forward. What they see on the screens happened precisely 4 days, 6 hours before so if they want to see something urgently that happened a day ago they simply have to wait. Doug uses this newly formed equipment in his investigation into the body of the young woman and on his way he discovers that he may be able to change her fate by going back in time.
This film sounds extremely complicated and to be honest… it is, however don’t let that put you off watching it. The storylines complications can be overlooked as this film is very intense & has so much action that you manage to look passed all the complications.
I’m not a fan of science fiction films and I usually avoid them like the plague but I had heard that this was an action movie as well and the fact that it has Denzel Washington in it makes it a lot more appealing to me. I had planned to see this at the cinema upon hearing very good reviews about it, partly just to see what all the fuss was about but I never got the chance to see it. I bought it on DVD for a while but when it was released on DVD all the hype surrounding it had disappeared and for some strange reason I just wasn’t too inclined to watch it. I didn’t actually get round to watching about 6 months after I bought it and that was purely out of boredom, I think hearing the dreaded words ‘science fiction’ momentarily put me off this but I’m glad I eventually got round to watching this because after the first half an hour all of my previous scepticism completely vanished.
I’ve got to say that this film is simply phenomenal, there’s no other word to describe it. Before this I had never ever seen a science fiction film that I liked and although this film hasn’t changed my opinion on the gut wrenchingly boring film it did shed some light on it for me and has led me to believe that some (not all) can have good interesting storylines.
The beginning of this really manages to engage your attention, it doesn’t start off slow with half an hour of so of talking, Déjà Vu digs straight into the action which is something I always like in a film as I have a very short attention span!
I like the way this film plays out almost in a backward order. You see the explosion of the boat first then you see how it can or could be prevented. This is a clever way of doing things as you already know the most likely outcome so if there’s a chance it can be changed then you immediately want to know how.
This film also takes you in a completely different direction than I thought it would, on the viewing of the explosion I assumed it would be simply about possibly preventing it and although it is they don’t bog it down with one storyline. I think the murder of the young woman is a brilliant way of separating the story to further gain peoples attention as one story for two hours can be incredibly boring. Tony Scott & Jerry Bruckheimer did a fantastic job on the 1998 film Enemy Of The State and I can sort of see similarities between the two however there aren’t enough to complain that Déjà Vu is a rip-off of their earlier success.
As I touched on before the storyline can get complicated, especially when the detective equipment is introduced and you hear about what you can & can’t do. In other films technicalities like that have made me mentally switch off but in this film it didn’t, by this point I was already engrossed in the film that even things like that couldn’t put me off.
The action scenes in this are brilliant, there’s one in particular which really sticks in my mind; that being the scene where Denzel Washington is driving the car with the glasses on, enabling him to see 4 days ago and the present day which means that he’s avoiding traffic in the present day but chasing after someone from 4 days ago. I know that probably makes no sense but if you’ve seen the film you’ll understand what I’m rambling about!
I was really surprised at how much this film managed to catch my attention right from the beginning, I was expecting to be asleep after about an hour of sci-fi waffle but I wasn’t. For those of you who are put off this film simply because it looks complicated then don’t be, I was confused in parts but the storyline is so strong & the action pulls you in so much that you wont care. Even if this film does confuse you, you’ll still understand the basics of what’s going on so it really doesn’t make an iota of a difference.
The ending is without doubt worth the little over two hour wait and it definitely wraps the film up nicely, the good thing is, is that this film isn’t predictable in the slightest. When I read the synopsis to this I thought ok so the boat explodes, he prevents it by going back in time & voila! However what you get is somewhat different to my silly expectations and I’m happy to say that this film exceeded m expectations by a mile & I would say to anyone who hasn’t seen it that it’s quite simply a must see. Whether you’re a sci-fi fan of not it makes no difference, you’ll be engrossed in this from start to finish either way.
There’s numerous special features on the DVD which just adds to it’s value, I haven’t seen many DVD’s that have as many special features as this one. I would highly recommend giving them a watch. They include: Surveillance Window The Ferry Explosion Developing The Character of Doug Carlin Makeup, Wardrobe and Special effects The Surveillance Window Cameras of Déjà Vu Split Time Car Chase Filming in New Orleans First team: Denzel, Tony and Jerry Stunts: Compound Stunts: Ferry Deleted Scenes Extended Scenes Movie Showcase
As you can see there’s a lot of special features that will keep you occupied for quite a while I imagine. This is just one more reason to buy this brilliant film.
The DVD is currently available from play.com for £5.99, the Blu-Ray edition is also available but for the dearer price of £14.99 however having seen this film and all the brilliant special effects and action sequences I can only imagine that this film would look amazing in HD and I say that if you can afford it then get it! I think when this came out I bought it for £12.99 so whether you go for the regular edition DVD at £5.99 or the Blu-Ray edition at £14.99 when you think about it it’s only about the price as a newly released DVD anyway isn’t it? So you really can’t go wrong with this. If you are sceptical about whether you’ll like this though then obviously go for the cheaper DVD just incase although I doubt that anyone will be disappointed with this. I’ve read quite a few reviews on this film, both on this site and other places and they all seem to be really positive so this is definitely a film to check out when you have the time as I guarantee you wont be disappointed!

Review of Deja Vu (DVD)
Advantages: A good film, amazing cast, and some very strong preformances Disadvantages: Not as good as it should have been. Poor direction in my opinion
Advantages: Cage & Moores performances, some fairly good CGI/effects & scenery in parts Disadvantages: The ending, tries to be a bit too clever, somewhat cheesy & formulaic
