This book marks an unprecedented publishing event: to mark the centenary of its foundation ... more
the British Security Service MI5 has for the first time opened its archives to an independent historian. The book reveals the precise role of the Security Service in twentieth-century British history from its foundation by Captain Kell of the British Army in October 1909 through two world wars up to and including its present roles in counter-espionage and counter-terrorism. The book describes how MI5 has been managed what its relationship has been with government where it has triumphed and where it has failed. In all of this no restriction has been placed on the judgements made by the author. The book also reveals the identities of previously unknown enemies of the UK whose activities have been uncovered by the Service adds significantly to our knowledge of many celebrated events and notorious individuals and definitively lays to rest a number of persistent myths; above all it shows the place of this previously extremely secretive organisation within the United Kingdom. Few books could make such an immediate and extraordinary increase to our understanding of British history over the past century.

***THE STORY***
The story is concerned with a political cover up. It starts with the death of a young lad escaping a detention centre and the resignation of a prominent M.P amid allegations of his involvement with the KGB. Nick befriends a respected journalist who dies in mysterious circumstances after meeting a Government 'mole', he then with the aid of Nina attempts to find out why. It continues until finally Nick gets the truth to the international press.
***THE CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE***
Plenty of location shots in and around London and Home Counties showing the Thames and many London pubs in rainy cloudy situations. I noticed a lot of characters smoking cigarettes. In terms of its style the film could have been made for English TV. And many of the British actors were familiar faces from TV & stage. Not surprisingly much of the emphasis is on dialogue & acting rather than scenery and film stunts. The musical score is uninspirational.
***MY OPINION***
The film offers some insight into the role & behaviour of the media & press in U.K. politics and government. It is unlikely to appeal to anybody who does not have an understanding of British culture. The familiar faces of the actors and rugged drama make for a certain amount of excitement & suspense. A film for the week and try not to drink too much whilst watching it. Its DVD format probably means that ownership at lower cost, essentially it has done nothing to enhance the video version. One for your patriotic collection.
Nick Mullen, a young reporter for a national daily newspaper, is beginning to drift into a cynical and bored routine when he suddenly stumbles across a political cover-up. With the aid of his colleague Vernon and his attractive secretary Nina, Nick sets out on a dangerous journey to uncover hidden truths.
