Deep Rising is an action/horror film directed by Stephen Sommers, who would later go on to direct "The Mummy" and "Van Helsing". It stars B-movie legend Treat Williams and Famke Janssen and Djimon Hounsou, who are both a lot more well known now.
Finnegan (Williams) is the leader of a group of mercenaries who takes on some very dangerous clients. Their plan is to get on board the world's most expensive cruise ship and steal as much as they can. But, when they get on board, they find nearly everyone is dead and that someone, or something, has trashed the ship. So Finnegan, along with his friends, his clients, and Trillian (Janssen), a con artist and thief who luckily knows a thing or two about automatic weapons, wage war against the creature, and try to kill it before it kills them!
There are so many B-movies out there that are just plain bad, bad acting, bad sets, bad effects, they really are no fun to watch at all. But this is completely opposite of that, this is fun, exciting and tense! It's just an all around great B-movie. Of course it helps when you've got a great cast and they work well together, which these actors do.
The director obviously knows how to do action, and this film is full of it. Great special effects, especially for a B-movie ten years ago, and the action sequences are fast, exciting and gory! It's just big, dumb, stupid fun, which is exactly what you want when you sit down to watch a film like this. It also, a rare thing for this kind of film, keeps you interested between action scenes as well, with characters that you really want to know what happens to them.
Overall a silly, very entertaining film. It's perfect if you just want to relax with a monster movie, just switch your brain off and enjoy! That's not a bad thing though, it's exactly what this film is intended to do, and it does it very well! Four stars.
