***Introduction*** This review is about a film called Deep Rising, which was released in 1998. The film is an eclectic mix of light comedy, horror, death, gruesomeness and can portray emotion like that of a thriller movie.
***The Plot*** The film starts with Finnegan (Treat Williams), who is paid by a group of gun wielding men to take them to a set of co-ordinates in the South China Sea. Little does Finnegan know that he is taking the men to the newest, most luxurious Cruise Liner in the world – the Argonautica. The gang intend to rob the ships vault, but as they float nearer to the ship they notice that there is a huge hole in the side of the ship.
The viewer knows vaguely what has happened, as we get to see that somebody aboard the ship destroys every system aboard by implanting a virus into the min computer. As they crew try to regain control a large blip appears on radar, heading straight towards
the Argonautica – which is where we are left in suspense!
As the gang board the ship snake like creatures with abnormally large sized mouths attack them. The plot quickly turns into a fight for survival as the group find others and get back to the small boat they arrived on. As they are fighting for survival, and to get the parts needed to get Finnegan’s boat moving again, they come across only three survivors, thief Trillian St James (Famke Jannsen), the owner of the ship (Nick Nolte), and the Captain of the Argonautica, many of which are picked as lunch along the way along with the gung-ho terrorist crew. One other character also brings comedy into the film with his stupid suggestions and comments and he plays Finnegan’s mechanic Joey Pantucci (Kevin O Connor). He does get a bit irritating though towards the end of the films and dies, but somehow springs back to life again!
After numerous run-ins with the ships owner, who suddenly turns bad and the monsters Trillian and Finnegan stumble on a massive sea creature after hearing the metal on the ship screech and bend! Finnegan shoots it in the eye and they both make their escape on a skidoo in the ships own docking bay. Joey is not so lucky as while he is waiting for the others on the boat the monsters presumably attack him. He is nowhere to be seen as Finnegan sets autopilot for his boat to crash into the Argonautica, just before leaving on the skidoo!
In the last few moments the owner of the ship sees the little boat pulling away and thinks they are all leaving on it so he jumps, lands on it and realises it is about to crash into the Argonautica.
Does the Ships Owner survive? What happens to Joey, Finnegan and Trillian? Watch it and see!
***The Characters/Quality of Acting/Plot Evaluation*** Generally, I thought there was a broad mix of characters – some good and some bad although they all seemed to fit together within the storyline well. I though the storyline was a bit far fetched but I suppose it is only fiction. I also noticed many inconsistencies throughout the film, such as Finnegan, who seems to keep clean even though there is blood everywhere and Trillian, who suddenly learns how to use very advanced automatic handguns!
The actors worked well together but did not work well as regards the storyline. If I were the director I would have chosen more GI Joe and Jane type characters, but instead we are given a mix of actors whom I have never heard of before and washed up type characters such as Nick Nolte - Pardon the Pun!
At the end of it though, I suppose it is one of those films that you love to hate.
***Price and Availability*** The DVD is available for £15.19 on Amazon but can be found cheaper, the Video is available on Amazon for £13.49 but can also be found cheaper and the Soundtrack is available on CD for about a tenner!
I would recommend visiting places such as cdzone.co.uk, musica.co.uk and 101cd.com, as you are bound to find these cheaper and possibly even with free delivery. I noticed some on eBay as well.
***Starring…*** Treat Williams, Famke Jannsen, Nick Nolte, Kevin O Connor.
***Overall*** I would recommend the film as a cheesy Saturday-night-in flick, but other than that don’t bother. It was enjoyable and don’t get me wrong, many of you would enjoy it but it was just not for me, kids or anyone on a cruise holiday hehe!

Production Year: 2005 - Horror - Director: Eli Roth - Original Language: English - Classification: 18 years and over - Starring: Jay Hernandez, Derek Richardson, Shane Daly, Lenka Vlasakova, Eythor Gudjonsson, Jan Vlasak
While this is better, and I applaud you for working on it, I still think its got too much of the story and not enough about the other aspects of the film. For instance, what about the special effects? Were there any special costumes? Did the soundtrack enhance or detract from the movie? Any memorable songs from the soundtrack? What about camera angles and direction? Was there any scenery that was particularly interesting? You mentioned that you thought the plot was a bit far fetched - what made it far fetched? Try working on those things and let me know if you revise it again.
