Deep rising is nothing more than a bit of fun - a sci-fi, horror cross over which has no pretensions of greatness but rather has a singular purpose to make its audience has a good time watching it. Set your brin in first gear, sit back and you will do just that - its great fun.
A group of mercenaries are heading out to a luxury ocean liner on Finegann's(Treat Williams) boat. He has no clue that they actually intend to hijack the huge pleasure ship but he doesn't care either just as long as he gets paid. Their plans get somewhat scupered when they find the ship has a huge hole in it and the entire passengers seem to be missing. At first they think that the passengers saw the ship sinking and all jumped overboard - how else can you explaint he disappearance of 800 passengers but its not long before they are attacked by nasty snake-like creatures, who are some mutated form of sea creature - very hostile and intent on making lunch out of their new found prey. fortunately our
band of mercanaries, Finnegan, his mechanic(and obligatory funny guy) Pantucci(Kevin J O'Connor) and later the ship's owner(nick Nolte) and (the equally obligatory love interest/sole female character who JUST HAPPENS to be rather beautiful and galamourous throughout) a female thief(Famke Janson), are also armed to the teeth but are still little match for the beasties. They ahave to escape and fast as they are picked off one by one in their attempts to get back to Finnegan's boat...
Like I said, there is not much in the way of plot(just an escuse to dump a band of gun toting mercenaries on a ship so that they can fight some monsters) and the cast, script and overall EVERYTHING is as cliched as you can possibly imagine. In short then, this movie ought to be pretty damn annoying and assigned to the bargain buckets never to be seen again other than by the occassional cheapskate who goes rummaging through them clutching his/her hard earned £2. The worse part is the script and acting. Its awful. I wouldnt say that the characters were miscast here, but rather that the characters couldn't possibly have been any better in their roles given the truly attrocious script. Want a clue as to the kind of script/acting to expect here? Well ok, it directed by Stephen Sommer who is also the director of The Mummy. Understand now? Well if you haven't seen these then no, you won't, so basically its as hammy and lamebrained as you can get with some(not) funny lines thrown in willy nilly although I do not remember laughing even once. No one here can act their way out of a paper bag and it shows, but it doesn't matter too much because half the time the only ones who speak are the lead 3 or 4 and the rest just fire guns and get eaten. And erm...well blah blah blah, because you could go on about the cliches, acting, scripting, dialogue, plot holes, etc. etc. all day...but it would STILL be a good movie.
No that probably doesn't make sense does it? Well, the thing about this movie as with The Mummy for example is that if you go in to it thinking "horror movie...sci-fi, I expect it to be serious and I wanna be scared!" then you are going to HATE it with a passion. Its not like that, and it was never meant to be like that. This movie plays itself for laughs and whilst its not going to have you cracking up laughing, its an overall sense of 'fun' which you get from it. After the opening couple of scenes the action is pretty much non-stop in the same way as something like Aliens, with the group rushing to find a way to escape against a sentient and rather impressively tough enemy. Gore hounds will have a ball here as well because there are some delightfully gross moments for you to feast your naked steaming eyes and ears upon - blood and gore a plenty...lovely. The beasties themselves look damn good and suitably menacing in their attack and appearance. Yes, they are computer generated but manage to not look too out of place in our imagination, as is often the case with these kinds of images - like they are pasted on.
Like I said, its a whole lot of fun although not particularly challenging on the brain. if you can sit back and relax without thinking too hard then this is a movie which you are going to love - if you are looking for something more serious and thought prevoking then you came to the wrong place..

I saw this film and found it was a good bit of mindless fun and quite entertaining. No masterpiece but who cares. Blowing up monsters is great action and a ship in the middle of the ocean is a great setting for this type of thing. As you said it's like Alien on a boat and at see no one can hear you scream. Well maybe they can.
