Although the name of this film sounds more like a bad case of nausea, Deep Rising is a blend of both science fiction and horror. It’s certainly not the finest example of this type of film, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was actually very entertaining.
It is the maiden voyage of the Argonautica – a huge, multi-million dollar cruise liner that has been designed specifically to provide limitless entertainment and pleasure for the world’s richest people. As the passengers party on board they are blissfully unaware of the dark, shabby boat speeding its way towards them. On board the boat are a group of modern-day pirates who have commissioned the craft to take them to the liner. On board the Argonautica, a shadowy figure downloads a foreign programme into the ship’s computers that completely disables every system in use. As the crew of the ship struggle to work out what has happened, a massive shape appears on the radar screen, speeding it’s way towards them from beneath the ocean. When the gang of pirates reach the ship, the craft is completely silent and motionless. The passengers are nowhere to be found – but the gang soon realise that something terrible has happened on board the Argonautica – and they are most definitely not alone…….
Deep Rising is an effective film because it is exciting – all too often, similar films will spend a long time building up to the action or will dwell heavily on a love interest. Deep Rising is full of action almost from the moment the film starts. However, Deep Rising is also surprisingly horrific – without giving too much away, a lot of people get killed in this movie and the title of my opinion may give you some indication as to the exact method with which they are despatched. The most horrific scenes don’t occur until the film is more than half way through but the effects are extremely graphic and genuinely quite stomach-churning. Needless to say, the action is all ridiculously over-the-top, but I really didn’t care – it looked good, and if you want a logical, realistic film then I’m guessing that you wouldn’t watch this anyway! The finest sequence for me was a breathtaking high speed chase through the stricken cruise liner at the climax of the film.
The film relies heavily on special effects, and the film makers have clearly made a conscious decision to set the film at night – it makes things so much easier from a technical point of view! The quality of the effects is generally quite high, although some scenes were more successful than others. The “monsters” were suitably slimy and ugly, and the scenes with them attacking the occupants of the ship were very realistic. Strangely enough, it was some of the less obvious effects that didn’t particularly impress me – I thought that the Argonautica looked very unbelievable (computer generated sea vessels rarely look good in movies).
I have read elsewhere that the film was completely devoid of humour – a statement with which I disagree completely. This film does have a tongue-in-cheek edge to it – it’s rather like a cross between Titanic, Aliens and The Towering Inferno – and some of the dialogue and interaction is genuinely quite witty.
Where the film really falls down is with the character performances. From the outset, I found most of the cast extremely irritating, completely unlikeable and often very cliched. The good guy of the film (played by Treat Williams) is the skipper of the boat commissioned by the gang of pirates who is rather unwittingly thrown into the whole thing – needless to say he’s a typically cheesy All-American hero who still manages to come out with a few corny jokes when he is facing impending doom. Famke Janssen plays the love interest – a beautiful international jewel thief whose hair never seems to fall out of place. The most irritating character is the archetypal idiot (in this case an engine mechanic) with the most excruciating voice and an inability to get killed. He stumbles from one scene to the next, wailing like Shaggy from Scooby Doo and generally winding everyone up. By the end of the film I was literally urging the monsters to get him just to shut him up.
The bad guys aren’t much better – the leader of the pirates is the usual hard-faced fearsome oriental in a polo-neck sweater. He leads a mismatched band of men who come across like a bag of pick and mix morons. Most nationalities are portrayed poorly - Australian (thick and ill-mannered); English (sly and unpleasant); African (tribal with attitude) – the cliches just keep on coming. That aside, as the band of pirates are the film’s main “menu” it is infinitely entertaining watching them get picked off one by one. This is one of those films that you know is very silly, and completely implausible, but it doesn’t stop still long enough for you to analyse it very closely. It’s a shame that the cast were so poor – but it’s the monsters that steal this show without a doubt – and you don’t really want to spend a lot of money on a cast that has a life expectancy of about twenty minutes after all!
Deep rising is nothing more than a bit of fun - a sci-fi, horror cross over which has no pretensions of greatness but rather has a singular purpose to make its audience has a good time watching it. Set your brin in first gear, sit back and you will do just that - its great fun.

Their plans get somewhat scupered when they find the ship has a huge hole in it and the entire passengers seem to be missing. At first they think that the passengers saw the ship sinking and all jumped overboard - how else can you explaint he disappearance of 800 passengers but its not long before they are attacked by nasty snake-like creatures, who are some mutated form of sea creature - very hostile and intent on making lunch out of ...

Advantages: The DVD case Disadvantages: The film Inside!
Comes a film with little to praise. This little known film is very bad. When a group of armed mercaneries intend to rob a cruise ship, they arrive on board a deserted ghost ship to find that things have gone horribly wrong. An ugly sea monster has taken over the ship, and the unlikly bunch of survivers and pirates must race to get themselves off the boat. Fast paced action big guns, poor acting, an un-original plot and lines like 'I've got a bad ... ...The hired 'witty' sea dog and his 'grease monkey' work together with the pirates, after overcoming the 'trust no-one idea'. The plot is obvious, people picked off one by one and eaten alive, only the good guys survive. Once on the ship, they find only 3 survivors. The captain, a jewel thief and another crew member. I got bored halfway through and turned it off. The DVD extras however are quite good, and the sound and picture quality is good. I cannot ...

Advantages: Famke, good special effects, great pacey movie Disadvantages: none really
Starring the very delicious Famke Janssen (Xenia of Goldeneye fame) and Treat Williams (lots of films but never the lead), this is a fun-filled rollercoaster of a ride. There are also a number of even less famous people you have seen before although I do know Wes Studi (Last of the Mohicans - the one with the hatchet and the bad haircut) and the annoying one from The Mummy (quaintly enough, he is annoying in this one too). Serious and thought provoking ... ...A semi-comic, semi-horror, really semi-love story , the basic plot concerns the hijacking of a luxury cruise liner by a bunch of baddies, a few heroes who are in with the wrong crowd and a great bloody big monster with very very long tentacles (hence the title of this piece although granted it has nothing to do with toilet paper!).
I don’t want to give away too much of the storyline (haha - I probably already have) but this is a deceptively ...

Advantages: Entertaining no brainer Disadvantages: Poor plot, limited DVD featues, silly bits (read op)
I'd never heard of this movie until I came across the DVD on the shelf at Woolworths, which as I could get it for a tenner, I decided to give it a try.
The film is a sort of sci-fi/horror movie which while suffering from a pretty poor plot, does what it's supposed to. Entertain. The action sequences coupled with some good special effects, allow the film to rise above the storyline, and most of the cast play it firmly in cheek.
So what's it about?
... ...across a rain-swept ocean to an as yet unknown destination. Cut to a scene showing a huge ocean liner, which is a floating casino full of rich people and you know where the torpedo boat and it's cargo are bound. Someone on the cruise liner sabotages the computer system and the ship grinds to a halt.
Back to the torpedo boat which reaches the now stricken liner. The torpedo boats crew and passengers board the liner, only to discover that it's empty ...

...is about a film called Deep Rising, which was released in 1998. The film is an eclectic mix of light comedy, horror, death, gruesomeness and can portray emotion like that of a thriller movie.
***The Plot***
The film starts with Finnegan (Treat Williams), who is paid by a group of gun wielding men to take them to a set of co-ordinates in the South China Sea. Little does Finnegan know that he is taking the men to the newest, most luxurious Cruise ... ...intend to rob the ships vault, but as they float nearer to the ship they notice that there is a huge hole in the side of the ship.
The viewer knows vaguely what has happened, as we get to see that somebody aboard the ship destroys every system aboard by implanting a virus into the min computer. As they crew try to regain control a large blip appears on radar, heading straight towards the Argonautica – which is where we are left in suspense!

A life-and-death journey to escape sea creatures who have emerged from the ocean floor to infest the Argonautica, one of the largest luxury liners in the world.
"...[An] energetic movie..." (New York Times, p.E24, 30/01/1998)
DVD Description
Aboard the luxury liner Argonautica, a mysterious and deadly presence makes mincemeat of vacationing passengers, leaving only a handful of terrified survivors adrift at sea. Enter a mercenary sailor and his crew, who board the ship in hopes of pilfering its riches--but instead find themselves the strange monster's next prey. Goofy fun from the director of THE MUMMY.
