Advantages: A touching family film, pretty good all round really (though not brilliant) Disadvantages: Only really that there have been too many asteroid films, and this may not deliver the sci-fi thrills some want/expect

Just to help you, I’ll outline some plot without giving things away – a young amateur astronomer spots a new ‘star’, which turns out to be an asteroid heading for earth. Unfortunately the scientist who confirms this is killed in a road accident on his way to alert people. It’s a year later that the news comes up – but the US government have been working on a plan with the Russians. A ship is to be sent out to plant explosives on the surface of the asteroid, blowing it into pieces and diverting its course.
Fairly obviously, the Earth is saved, but things don’t run entirely smoothly – and therein lies the drama of the film (I won’t spoil the details). It’s not a sci-fi action film though – banish thoughts of Matt Le Blanc as a brash fighter pilot. This film stays well within what’s relatively realistic (given modern technology).
It’s also a surprisingly touching film. There’s heroism from the crew in space, but not in big shouting, triumphant American soldier kind of way. The scene where they say goodbye to their families is just one of several in the film I actually found rather moving. I must’ve been in a soppy mood, because there were numerous pieces I found moving – despite the fact I’d seen the film before.
The film’s more of a drama, that deliberately tries to evoke these emotions, and make you think ‘what if..?’ (After all, perhaps an asteroid is heading for the Earth and the government is seeking to avoid an Extinction Level Event while we’re kept oblivious – conspiracy theorists rejoice!) This makes it a pretty good family film. I suppose younger children though may be scared by the ‘what if’ thoughts – it’s difficult to reassure them there isn’t such an asteroid, and they may be disturbed by some scenes of death (We never see gory deaths, but you see panicking people who know they’re going to die – the film touches on the breakdown of society as looting begins with the coming castrophe).
The acting is generally good. Téa plays an important part, with her strained relations with her parents, and formed one focus of the story. The child actors who were also vital to some of the more emotive parts of the film, and thankfully coped well with their parts rather than being as annoying as some child actors can be.
The effects were also well up to standard. As I said, this isn’t sci fi, but there’s still need for space ships, and they appear pretty realistic. I was sure about the landing on the asteroid, but that wasn’t really a visual problem (it looked ok), more a doubt about scientific plausibility in real life. But then, I wouldn’t be an expert in astronomy.
There were some great scenes in this film though, that really seemed to capture little images of reality. We see the chaos inside the newsroom when the story breaks – ‘Where are the astrophysicists?’ ‘Get me geologists. And climatologists’ ‘Graphics. I need GRAPHICS!’ It’s true to life, and raises a smile – like much of this film, not overblown, but gently arousing emotion in a relatively understated way.
Going by viewer ratings on IMDB (5.9 from over 17,000 votes as I write) it’s not well thought of. Admittedly it isn’t a big budget flashy effect laden film; but I thought it was simple and well done with a touching human element. More a family film than a sci-fi space adventure too.

...on the IMDb aptly names Deep Impact’s rival “Barfageddon” and with this, I certainly agree. Deep Impact wasn’t JUST a no-brainer disaster picture. It was a drama. Drama = dramatic. It was a genuinely good piece of movie-making that will always just be missed in shadow of ‘the bigger better version’. There is no apparent leading role in Deep Impact. The title role is equally shared between the four stories behind the meteor. The first story is of ... ...one my deepest fears in Deep Impact. The fear of knowing I won’t be saved. The ARK plan is simply what it sounds like, for a select few (and those that bring a certain trade to society e.g. doctor etc.) they will be brought salvation by seeking refuge for two years underground, safe from the darkness above. No-one above the age of 50 is allowed into the ARK. They are deemed worthless. I found this harsh and brutal and I became part of the cast in ...

...of disaster films, the movie, Deep Impact is one of the best of its kind as evidenced by its unique delivery. With the help of our present day technology, the movie stirs a lot of emotions that is deeply moving and believable. In appreciation of the story itself, the movie has dual elements to describe a asteroid hitting earth. There are a lot of imagery and camera tricks that were put in by the producers that are so overwhelming to the audience. Advantages: Good graphics, people actually die (which sounds like a strange advantage, it just makes a nice change thats all!) Disadvantages: They don't run quick enough!
...sum up this film….
Deep Impact = Armageddon
If you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all really. After all, an asteroid hitting the Earth means the same for us all anyway. DEATH.
The story line in Deep Impact follows pretty much the same path as Armageddon. In case you’ve not seen either then……..
a few men are sent into space to destroy an oncoming asteroid. That’s all you need to know really.
This film, ... ...that’s a different story!)
Deep Impact isn’t quite as catastrophic as Armageddon though, had the mission gone as planned the smaller fragment would have wiped out New York and caused a tsunami. Not drastic on the scale of things when you think about it (but obviously not for those living in and around New York).

Advantages: Great Plot, Great Variety Of Actors And Great Relationships Built Up Between Them, Great Special Effects (SFX) Disadvantages: A Bit More Dramatism Would Be Good!!
Probably about a year ago, I first saw this film on Sky Box Office. Watching it, I enjoyed every minute of it, most certainly with moments of excitement and suspense as the tidal wave struck over the Statue of Liberty and thousands of people attempted to flee to higher land to escape the monstrous wave. A huge comet has been detected to hit Earth and apparently wipe out all human life. This film follows three plots, the first being the young astrologist ... ...this section seem to feel, I do not think that too much time is spent on this section of the story. It also follows the life of the journalist who first realises about the comet, long before the US Government releases any information to the public. She is taken off the road by FBI agents, to see the President, after she has been out attempting to interview a man who has recently suddenly retired and is heading off on a round-world trip with lots ...

Advantages: Good Film Disadvantages: Could have been more involved
Deep impact. Another one of those disaster movies that can either go one way or another, good or bad. I’d say that Deep Impact was quite a good film, but not excellent. The film is set around an asteroid that is heading for a collision course with the earth, which, if does hit the earth, will cause widespread destruction over America, but cause chaos in the rest of the world. The asteroid is supposed to be the size of New York, so you can see ... ...film is the sub plots. I’m not going to go into what they are about, but they don’t have any relevance to the movie really and seem to be dragged out a bit. On saying that though, it adds that emotional feel to the film as you see how different people cope with the disaster waiting to happen which is why the sub plots were aded to the film.
Acting is good with Morgan Freeman acting out the role of America’s president. I’ve ...

FILM ONLY REVIEW
The 1990s saw a glut of disaster movies being released, from the action packed and rather egotistical Independence Day to the good if a little silly Armageddon. DeepImpact, although a disaster movie, is different to these two films by concentrating more on the relationships between different characters then on the disaster itself. Directed by Mimi Leder, what I liked best about DeepImpact is the way it engages with its key characters so that we actually care about what happens to them, in comparison to something like The Day After Tomorrow where the characterisation is pretty poor. The stand out performance for me is Tea Leoni as reporter Jenny Lerner.

Advantages: Exciting Action Movie Disadvantages: Leave your brain behind
This movie is another Hollywood special effects extravaganza. The storyline isn't as good as DeepImpact (not yet out on DVD in the UK) but who cares when you've got superb action to back it up - the meteor
shower at the beginning of the film is just fantastic. The story moves along at quite a pace and managed to keep me so enthralled that I kept my eyes off my watch throughout. The only possible offence this movie might cause is thanks to America saving the world (again) without so much as a chat with any other countries!!!! The DVD picture quality to so good that if you watch some of the special effects in slow motion that you can pick out the errors in the effects. The Dolby Digital sound is also quite stunning. Until DeepImpact comes out this is the best meteor movie around. ...
