For those who are not concerned with unrealistic storylines and just want some excitement despite a weak plot, then this film is for you. The film is about a group of researchers who try to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease by injecting some sort of fluid into a shark's brains but this backfires as the sharks become intelligent. From then on, the shark seems to know the researcher's every move and it's exciting stuff as the researchers try to get away from this unbelievably intelligent shark!
Personally, I found the film too far-fetched for my liking. It doesn't surprise me that this film was directed by Renny Harlin (of Cliffhanger and Die Hard 2 fame). Everything is so ludicrous that I had to laugh! A typical scene would be the shark just about to eat somebody but at the very last second the guy escapes by climbing up a ladder but wait....the ladder breaks and he's in trouble again! Somehow he escapes again but no, he's about to be eaten alive - or is he? It's nearly as bad as a Rambo film where one man kills an army of thousands single-handedly! There are a couple of scenes where it looks like the shark is killed, firstly from a gas explosion and secondly from electrocution. Of course, this is no ordinary shark - this shark is probably capable of surviving an atomic explosion! Furthermore, why on Earth did the researchers choose sharks for their experiment - do sharks brains have the capacity to be more intelligent than humans? I'm no Barry Norman but I know a good film when I see one and Deep Blue Sea is certainly not a good film.
Deep Blue Sea will have its fans but I'm more into something that makes sense. I have to say the special effects are very well done but that's the only positive comment I can make. I can only recommend this film to action fans, otherwise give this film a miss.
