There's something in the water!

I have recently watched "Deep Blue Sea" on Sky Movies, and highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in suspense/action movies.

Based along the lines of the long standing "Jaws" theme (i.e. great big psycotic sharks!), "Deep Blue Sea" tells the story of an aquatic laboratory studying the behaviour and pattern of sharks. The twist lies in the fact that the sharks are not just being studied, but also being genetically modified in the pursuit of cures for current human diseases, in this particular case Alzheimer's. By altering the genes within these sharks this creates a culture which can be used as a possible cure.

This is where events start to take a nasty and sinister turn. What the biologists don't count on is the gene therapy making the sharks not only more aggressive, but also a damn sight more intelligent and lethal, enabling them to think for themselves and develop at a more sophisticated rate then previously.

Although slow to start, once the sharks become more "enlightened" as to what is happening to them the fun begins, Have you ever seen a shark swim backwards? Well these sharks can. Remember the velociraptors in "Jurassic Park"? Well think along those lines and you'll have some idea of how clever their maritime compatriots become after playing around with their gene-pull. Not a good idea really, giving one of the oldest predators on the planet something to think with.

The plot itself is fairly self explanatory, and is in effect an updated version of the "Jaws" scenario, as one by one our heroes get to be on the wrong end of a fish dinner. However don't let that put you off, as there are good performances from Samuel L Jackson (as usual but unfortunately not in it long enough), and also a rather hilarious but equally good performance from LL Cool J (who makes quite a good actor actually) as a rather comic chef who inadvertently becomes a bit oh a hero. The action is good, the digitised sharks are well presented and believable, and the whole thing moves along swimmingly (sorry, excuse the pun!). A good romp, and definitely worth watching.
