Advantages: Good storylines Disadvantages: Not as many laughs as expected
Goodnight Sweetheart is one of those programmes that I had heard about quite a bit but had never really managed to catch on the TV. For that reason I decided that I would ask my granddad if he would buy it for me for Christmas. Being lovely he said yes and so here I am reviewing it.
Goodnight Sweetheart is a sitcom that ran for six years from 1993 to 1999. Gary Sparrow is a very typical man with an everyday life; that is however until he becomes an accidental time traveller. A small alley called Duckett's Passage looks exactly like an everyday alleyway to you and me but for Gary Sparrow it is a passage to warn torn London. A passage to the Blitz, to rationing and barrage balloons but most importantly a little pub called the Royal Oak and its barmaid?Phoebe.

mentality. The relationship between them is also consistent throughout. Dervla Kirwan, as Phoebe, however is in my opinion a much better opposite to Gary. She is a strong women yet due to the era in which she was born seems much more passive and relaxed than Yvonne ever could.
Now unlike the first series this series provides just the right amount of laughs without turning the show into a farce of unconnected incidents simply to produce a giggle. The way in which Nicholas Lyndhurst delivers his prophecies for the future is extremely humorous to the audience although of course the 1940's characters obviously do not see this humour. Phoebe herself is also quite a comic character and her strength towards Gary does generate a few laughs, as does the sometimes-odd behaviour of PC Denton.
All in all this series is one I would highly recommend ...
Fred Dibnah's Age of SteamDVD is another exceptionally good TV programme released on DVD that carefully reflects and capture's Fred Dibnah's love of steam and his respect for the engineers who made steam not only a possibility but a living and breathing reality before, during and beyond the Victorian era.
As anyone who knows of Fred Dibnah will be able to testify, Fred Dibnah has had a special fascination for all things steam since his childhood growing up in the Northern industrial town of Bolton, Lancashire. In Bolton if cotton was King, the steam must assuredly have been his Queen or consort.
Fred's respect was made manifest by the fact that he carefully and expertly restored steam engines not only for himself (his Aveling and Porter traction engine for one) but also for friends and later for commercial clients.
