A journey through the sixteenth century borderlands of England and Scotland in search of the Border Reivers - the story of the last corner of Britain to be subdued by authority.
Advantages: Beautiful scenery and excellent production. Disadvantages: None
If you were unlucky enough to miss the recent television documentary featuring Joanna Lumley, who fulfilled a lifelong ambition to visit the Land of the Northern Lights, then you may enjoy the DVD which has been made of her journey.
Available from Amazon for £10.88 this is, in my opinion, a treasure. Recently I posted one off to one of my daughters who not only loves Joanna Lumley but also shares my fascination with this part of the world.
The front cover of this DVD sets the scene. Joanna stands there puffed up in layers of clothing against a background of glaciers. These paint the horizon in a glistening polar white. We are told at one point in the DVD that it's not exactly what she would wear to the Oscars!
Growing up in tropical Malaysia Joanna had always had a dream of visiting the "Arctic North". She had a little ...
Advantages: Robbins is an excellent guide in this largely unknown land - it's terrifically informative. Disadvantages: Perhaps too much emphasis on politics in the latter stages.
times, fascinating, mystifying, funny, and appalling, but always immensely readable.
What comes across most of all is the courage of the Kazakh people, sandwiched for so long between two great empires, and yet now emerging as a stable, oil and mineral-rich democracy under their (apparently) universally loved president, Nazarbayev - himself a steel-worker in harder times.

Robbins' clear admiration of the man is a little infectious, and yet also tempered slightly by his understanding ...
Advantages: Border Collie Owners Will Love It, Shows The True Active Side To The Border Collie Disadvantages: Not for none doggie people
also brief scenes shown of the border collies doing what they are best bred to do, working sheep on a working farm.
The 20 border collies are running over farm land enjoying them selves whilst 18 sound tracks are played. Several colours and coat typed border collies are included in this dvd not just the traditional black and white colours everyone thinks of when you mention border collies. There are no voices or wording throughout the film so it is basically a video of a group of dog's life with music in the background lasting around 80minutes. This is quite a long time and can get boring unless you really love this breed of dog.
It was produced by Andy Nickless him and his partner train border collies at Kings Green Farm here they also breed their border collies for sheep work and occasionally breed International Sheepdog Society ...
