I absolutely love this programme.
It pulls no punchs, its a tough grity, dirty violent western. Its definitely not for all.
I missed nearly all of this on sky, the one thing i remembered from that initial impression though was the language. If you are easily offended do not buy this. It contains the strongest language you can imagine in heavy doses, i.e. in every sentence. This doesnt damage the series for me at all, it merely sets the tone, makes you realise the harshness of the world in which it is set.
The language can also be hard to follow, this is basically because of the era its from, the victorian english mixed with the profanities works very well, it just requires a little concentration. This again sets the series stall though, it shows its not just a hack n slash swearfest set in the wild west, but its an intelligent programme with well thought out storylines that have to be followed.
The main cast are excellent. Ian McShane is worlds apart from Lovejoy. He portrays the evil bar owner / pimp Al Sweargen brilliantly, hes monstrous but you will find yourself routing for him instantly. Powers Boothe plays Als nemesis, a rival (but higher class) bar owner who moves into his territory. His over-the-top persona clashes perfectly against the caustic McShane.
Seth Bullock is first on the credits, which isnt really warranted at this stage, he starts off a hardware store owner with a moody confidence and a sense of justcie about him. His partner Saul Starr is the more business minded one of the pair. Their characters slowly build up throughout the two series - as do they all infact - but theirs come more to prominence.
The Doc is a favourite of mine, hes kind at heart but has an unorthodox bedside manner. Unlike other Docs of this era it isnt just bandages and amputations, you really get an idea of how medicine of the day was practiced.
The Infamous Wild Bill Hickok and his friends Charlie Utter & Calamity Jane - Doris Day she aint - are just a few of the real life characters living in the mining camp, although not hstorically accurate it does follow some historical stories and timelines.....Wild Bill best watch his back then !
A final mention to Mister Wu, the leader of the 'celestials', or chinese as we know them, whose grasp of english is somewhat limited but very funny.
If you like westerns, or if you like hard hitting dramas with a hint of comedy, such as the sopranos and west wing, give Deadwood a try, dont just get season one tho, season two is just as good if not better !
Advantages: Grippingly real with a wonderfully crafed storyline Disadvantages: A lot of swearing
If you like gritty westerns then i can highly recommend this series. Featuring characters such as Wild Bill Hiccock and Calamity Jane it documents the rise of the town of Deadwood, situated outside of the US in Sioux territory and operating with no law.
Murder, gambling and prostitution are constant themes and if these or bad language- VERY bad language- offend you than steer clear.
If you can handle the swearing i guarantee that you'll enjoy this.
... ...and even a small-pox outbreak as well as struggling with deep moral dilemmas.
Ian McShane proves that he can do more than just Lovejoy and David Caradine's brother does a wonderful Wild Bill. Fans of Lord of the Rings can see Grima in a whole new light.
Each episode ends with a hauntingly appropriate song. Sometimes thes will make you laugh but if your as soft as I am then you may find yourself crying too!
This is another reason why HBO series' ...

...previously only flicked over to Deadwood when it was on the TV be it waiting for something else to start or during breaks I had obviously struggled to pick up what was going on. However after buying season 1 (for £15-bargain!) I found myself asking why I had been so stupid as not to have watched any of the 3 season run previously!
As I don't believe in giving strorylines away I won't touch on that side of things, If you are interested and act on ...

Loved this series. Cowboy films never used to be like this. The music, the characters and the action are all superb. After watching the first two episodes you will be hooked. Western fun warts and all! The final episode leaves you wanting more. So thank god for season 2 and 3 I cannot recommend this series highly enough, for a few pounds you can spend hours enjoying this series. Unlike many TV series it bears repeat viewing, the characters are quite ... ..."adult TV" experience. The best way to see this series is on DVD, apart from the quality and extras if it was a book it would be a page turner, as soon as one episode finishes you have to see the next one. The language is outrageously profane, something which I personally enjoyed but I can uderstand some people would be offended by, don't watch with your kids (it will embarass them) or with your parents (it will embarass you). ...

DVD Description
HBO delivers another stunning, evocative drama in DEADWOOD. The channel has an impressive reputation when it comes to producing edge-of-your-seat television (THE SOPRANOS, SIX FEET UNDER), and DEADWOOD follows neatly in that tradition. Set in 1876, the story unfolds just two weeks after the defeat of Custer at Little Big Horn. The town of Deadwood is located in the Black Hills Indian Cession, and is populated largely by illegal settlers and miscreants looking to make a quick buck. Among them are Al Swearengen (Ian McShane), who owns the local saloon; Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant), a former law enforcer; and the infamous Wild Bill Hickok (Keith Carradine). Some awesome acting combines with intricate storylines, absorbing direction, and some impressive sets to make DEADWOOD another essential series from the HBO stable.
