Dead Man's Shoes is an English film which was produced in 2004. It was directed by Shane Meadows who was also responsible for This is England, Northern Soul and Once Upon a Time in the Midlands.
The film has a certificate of 18 and a running time of approximately 90 minutes.
The film stars -
Paddy Considine - Richard Gary Stretch - Sonny Tony Kebbell - Anthony Jo Hartley - Jo Seamus O'Neill - Big Al Stuart Wolfende - Herbie Paul Sadot - Tuff Paul Hurstfield - Mark Emily Aston - Patti George Newton - Gypsy John Neil Bell - Soz Craig Considine - Craig Matt Considine - Matt Andrew Shim - Elvis
No great stars that I recognised, although my memory is not that good! It does seem like it was a bit of a family affair with 3 members of the Considine family starring in the film!!
The story…. The main star in the film is Paddy Considine who plays Richard, is a soldier returning from service in the army. He returns to his home town, which is a small village in Derbyshire, but it soon becomes apparent that he has not returned for a quiet life. As the story unfolds, you learn that he has returned to take revenge upon a group of thugs who tormented and abused his brother, Anthony, who suffered from mental problems, years before.
The film is constructed with a series of flashbacks to show how Anthony suffered at the hands of the gang, with some quite disturbing scenes. The actions taken by Richard, would normally lead the viewer to perceive him in a negative way, but he really is the hero in this film. He begins his rule of terror with discrete appearances to the gang, making them feel uneasy. He creeps into their flats and sprays writing on their walls and even on their clothes.
Eventually, the men are picked off one, by one, but one of them is missing……..
The film concludes with a great twist at the end, but leaves the viewer with a feeling of sadness.
I found the film very enjoyable to watch, I especially enjoy UK made films. Richard, the main character is taken on superbly by Paddy Considine. He makes the role his own and as previously mentioned above, although he carries out extreme acts of violence, you as the viewer support him. The scattering of flashbacks throughout the film remind the viewer why he is taking this action, and you then egg him on! (well I did!!!)
I felt great sympathy for Anthony, Richard's mentally challenged brother. Again, this part was played superbly by Tony Kebbel. Anthony is a softly spoken, easily influenced boy with the added problems with his mental capacity. His vulnerability increases the hatred felt towards the gang that abuse him.
The gang of thugs themselves play excellent parts, small time, petty criminals. The aim of the film is for the viewer to hate them and this was easily accomplished.
I would not recommend this film to those who are easily upset by scenes of abuse and violence, as the flashbacks are so realistic. But the film is excellent, it is dramatic, thrilling and the ending is truly genius.
