Richard Linklater's DAZED AND CONFUSED takes a hysterical, nostalgic cross-clique look at American high school social development. On the last day of school in May 1976, students...
more...at a suburban Texas high school wait, lackadaisically, for classes to end. The restless almost-seniors--an eclectic group of stone-heads, fraternal jocks, and snobby sorority girls--can't wait to haze the incoming freshman, an annual event as harrowing for freshman boys as it is humiliating for girls. Amidst this teenage wasteland of drugs, partying, and rock and roll is football star Pink (Jason London), who saves scrawny pre-frosh Mitch (Wiley Wiggins) from being paddled to oblivion by upper-classmates. But Pink has his own battles: he's struggling over the head coach's demand that football players sign a pledge to abstain from sex and all psychoactive substances. When a wild end-of-the-year party is cancelled, the students end up congregating at a beer-blast in the back woods, organized by aging hang-about Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey). In the same way that George Lucas assembled a cast of fresh young faces for AMERICAN GRAFFITI, Linklater here creates an unforgettable cast of characters that are immediately familiar to anyone who has ever been through high school.

Full review
This film comes from the Director of other cult teen drama/comedy Empire Records. It follows the individual stories of a handful of high school characeters from different age groups and peer groups, leaving school for either graduation or spring break. Set in the 1970s america.

First we have the Seniors who are making sure they give the new freshman a good hazing, by making them perform cruel and harsh tasks and covering them in eggs and flour etc. Although in fairness, they are only doing what has been done to them, this is an initiation ceremony of sorts!

Then We have the freshmen, who are scared and nervous of their new role in school life, and of the hazing of course! Four young friends manage to escape the hazing and we see how their story unfolds.

There are the stoners, who spend all their time in school mashed, making bongs in shopclass!

Then we have the preppys who are popular, and the jocks who who get a hard time from the school coach who push them harder in their sports.

We follow their stories over one day and one night where we see the seperate stories of each character and how they ultimately link together.

The stories culminate into one large story where all the students from all ages and social groups meet for a huge outdoor party in a local park that lasts all night.

There are tantums, fights, friendships formed and broken and romances blosom between the most unlikely of couples.

Its all you need for a great teen film, showing the journeys we go through at school and the people we meet and how they have an impact on us. But under a that, this really is just another stereotyped teen film. Although one of the best.

There isnt really a strong plot or major storyline but this still remains one of my famous films.

It stars a young ben affleck as a young preppy bully, the lovely Milla Jovovich as the stunning hippy, stoner singer and Rory Cochrane (empire records) as the lovable stoner.

The movie is played against a great selection of 70s rock and roll. The film is stunningly shot with some very poignant and emotional scenes, however it is never cheesy, corny or overly-dramatic.

It is a great film for any teenager to relate you.

Creticate 18 (contains strong swearing)

Running time: 103 minutes.
