Let me start by saying that this box set is great value. For the price you are paying, you are going to get a lot of quality entertainment. All 6 seasons, and the finale, are in this set. Every episode ever made.
The show itself is one of my personal favourites, I grew up with these characters. I was there from beginning to end. What sets Dawson's Creek apart from all other comparable shows, is the quality of the writing and the acting.
The dialogue is stylised, unrealistic, but also very literate. The interchanges between the characters are always a joy to watch. Its funny, and, as I mentioned, while the dialogue itself isn't realistic, the emotions being conveyed are universal and familiar - I'm sure everyone remembers the period of their lives that this show encapsulates so well.
The characters in the show are good mix of different archetypes. Each has their own role or function. There is the bad girl, the cheeky sidekick, the noble central character, the tom-boy, the high school bitch, the randy parents etc. You will grow to like and loath particular characters, everyone has their favourites. The chemistry between the characters, and the fine young actors portraying them, is one of the shows strongest features.
The storylines are nearly always executed well and deal with a whole range of issues, like teen homosexuality, unrequited love, infidelity, drug abuse, parental breakdown, academic difficulties etc. There are always three of four "threads" of stories running consecutively, so even if you don't find one element gripping, you will probably like another "thread".
The last thing I'll mention is the discrepancy in quality between Seasons 1-4, and 5-6...
Season 1 through 4 contain some of the best television you will ever see, for all the reasons I mention above (although the start of Season 3, with the introduction of Eva - is a real comedic wobble!). Seasons 5 and 6 are weak in comparison.
Once the characters graduate high school, and leave Capeside (in other words: "the creek" of the title), the show losses direction, the characters change in inconsistent ways that don't really make much sense, and a host of new secondary characters are introduced - all of which are uniformly terrible.
But by the time you reach season 5, you will have fallen in love with the show, and the main characters and you'll keep watching until the end. It's not that season 5 and 6 are bad, its just that they are not as brilliant as the first four years of the show. That said, the feature length series finale, is an amazing piece of drama, and more than redeems the weaker final years.
Overall, Dawson's Creek is a well acted, well made, well written show with diverse characters, interesting stories, beautiful locations and an excellent soundtrack. Recommended to everyone who can remember the troubles of their teens!
