Dawn Of The Dead is a remake of a 1978 film of the same name by George A. Romero. It was released in the UK 26th March 2004 & was a huge box office success, grossing an estimated $102,356,381 on a budget of 28,000,000. The movie is only one of a handful of zombie movies to make over $100 million at the box office. The film, as you’d probably expect is rated 18 & runs for approximately 100 minutes.
Dawn Of The Dead is directed by Zack Snyder, his list of credits is limited but it’s about quality not quantity, he worked on the massive hit 300 starring Gerard Butler & he’s also directed newly released film The Watchmen which I’ve heard is fantastic.
There’s no a-list stars in the film but in these types of films there rarely are, unless of course you think of Mila Jovovich in the Resident Evil films. The main characters are played by Sarah Polley, she’s starred in My Life Without Me & No Such Thing.
Probably the most well known actor comes in the form of Ving Rhames, I didn’t actually recognise the name when I saw the synopsis of this film but when I saw him I recognised him, he’s appeared in Con Air & Pulp Fiction. The only person that I had actually heard of is the gorgeous Mekhi Phifer who’s appeared in 8 Mile & Honey.
Dawn Of The Dead begins with Ana (Sarah Polley) a nurse, returning home from a long shift to her husband & daughter. Everything seems fine until her & her husband are asleep, their daughter bursts into their room & awakes her Father. She’s covered in blood & her Father immediately jumps out of bed to see if she’s ok, she bites him in the neck. Ana tries her hardest to save him but it’s impossible, he loses too much blood. Ana is obviously in pieces but she doesn’t exactly have much time to mourn as a couple of seconds after his ‘death’ her husbands re-awakes as a zombie & tries to attack his wife.
Ana manages to flee the house in her car only to discover that the nightmare she’s just gone through isn’t a one off, the whole neighbourhood is in turmoil. While on the run she encounters tough cop Kenneth (Ving Rhames) they soon meet a man, his heavily pregnant wife & a man named Michael. The group decide that the safest place to go would be the mall, they manage to make it there in one piece but the heavily pregnant woman gets bitten during a scuffle with a zombie. Ana soon realises that it’s the bites that bring people back to life & the only way to be sure they wont wake up is to shoot them in the head. They soon realise that they can only stay in the mall for a limited amount of time, sooner or later they’ll have to go out there & face the zombies in the hope of escaping.
I was actually quite impressed when I first watched this film, I borrowed it from a friend on DVD & I thoroughly enjoyed it. It does get a bit bogged down after about an hour & I feel that it could have been shortened down a bit but it’s an enjoyable film that will keep you interested from start to finish.
I did find this film enjoyable however I do prefer the Resident Evil films to this one, partly because they’re shorter but also because they have a stronger storyline. Half way through Dawn Of The Dead it kind of loses it’s purpose in a way as you’re still none the wiser as to why this has happened.
This film is very violent & there are some really gory moments so if you’re a squeamish person then I wouldn’t recommend this at all. Although there’s a lot of blood & gore in this film I didn’t find it particularly scary, maybe because the concept has been used countless times before but mainly because it just isn’t that scary! This is because nothing was really explained, by the end of the film I was still left wondering what had happened to make everyone turn into zombies.
If you want a horror film that has a compelling storyline then this isn’t it, if you want a horror film that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish that includes unlimited amounts of blood & guts then this is definitely the film for you! I haven’t seen the original but I’ve heard it far surpasses the remake which is so often the case. Having said that I did really enjoy this film so I can only imagine how good the original must have been.
The special features included on the DVD are: Audio commentary 'The Lost Tape': deleted scenes with audio commentary from director Zack Snyder 'The Lost Tape': Andy's terrifying last days revealed 'Special Bulletin' featurette 'Surviving The Dead' featurette Interactive menu Scene access
The DVD is available from play.com for £4.99 which is a great bargain for such a good film.
