Horror - Director: William Friedkin, John Boorman, William Peter Blatty, Renny Harlin, Paul Schrader - Original Language: English - Classification: 18 years and over
Advantages: Improved acting (slightly), realistic-looking gore Disadvantages: There is nothing related to the original cannibal "family"
...This is my review of the 3rd installment in the ever increasing TexasChainsawMassacre saga: 'Leatherface'. If you've read my reviews on the previous TCM movies, then you'll understand my position on these sequels... they aren't ANYTHING like the original. As with TCM 2, the original actor of Leatherface (the chainsaw weilding man who carves people up for dinner) who was in the first film, isn't in this one.
'Leatherface: The TexasChainsawMassacre III' begins with the now common voice-over introduction. From this we learn of how only one of the murderous "family" lived to stand trial (dying in 1981) and that authorities concluded that the so-called Leatherface person was just a multiple personality of the dead family member, springing to life when he dawned the mask. So, I guess it's now safe to travel into Texas again? No chance...

Advantages: New Idea Disadvantages: Not very gory, TV movie feel to it
...The first was a dark and disturbing masterpiece. The second was mildly amusing…and not to mention gory, and this, the third instalment of the series has…well not a lot really.
Basically the story involves a couple who are delivering a car from coast to coast. Unfortunately for them, they pass through Texas, the home of Leatherface and his crazy family, who lure them off the road and hunt them down. Their only hope of survival comes in the form of Benny, a survivalist played by Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead, From Beyond)
Opting for more of a rehash of the original than to be brave and try anything new, TX3 loses the laughs and gore of part 2 and tries to recreate the feel of the first. But, alas this is not to be and we are left with an average movie, with what can only be described as a made-for-TV feel to it.
There are a few parts...

Advantages: One word: terrifying Disadvantages: Too tense to watch.
...I'm not normally a fan of horror movies but was persuaded to see this on halloween. It was definatly the most tense film I have ever seen, the combination of a jaws style soundtrack, chainsaw noises and leatherface chasing people around deserted buildings is what did it. There were points in the movie when I actually jumped (which succeeded in scaring those around me).
This movie while based on the original texaschainsawmassacre, has enough new sequences and the improvements in SFX and acting make a huge difference.
From the moment the movie starts, the tension begins to build. It is refreshing in that it doesn't rely on the usual cliches of horror movies to get cheap scares. Instead the eerie settings create an atmosphere long before the chainsaw gets to work.
Be warned though this movie is extremly graphic and doesn't hold back...
