The second of George Romero's now quadrilogy of living dead films and in my personal opinion, probably his best. I watched this film without seeing its prequal, Night of the living dead, and due to the way it is scripted, and how well put together the lines are, i soon picked up the plot very easily. This was also the very first zombie horror flick i had watched, and it is the one that i will always remember for making me want to watch more and more of this subgenre of horror.
To give a brief description of the film, without giving too much away, its set in a world where the dead do not lay at rest, they rise up as blood thirsty zombies, with their only purpose in life being to eat the allready living. What adds to this allready hellish vision is the cold chilling fact that as soon as one of them gets their teeth into you, no matter where, you transfer into one of these demonic creatures. With the situation getting way out of control, people are evacuating the cities in search of refuge from the creatures. The plot follows a" mixed up" group of evacuees, fleeing one of the cities in a helicopter, and while searching for supplies, stumble across an abondend mall, filled with everything they need to last them a lifetime. The only problem that faces them are the mass amounts of zombies in the interior and whole load of other problems, but i will leave it at that point, not to spoil the film.
What makes this film so spectacular is just the pure fact, theres nothing you can do to beat these things, there is no ultimate escape, human life is doomed. This type of chilling fact could even be implemented into one of the tamest episodes of Barney, turning it into a pure horror flick, although to some that isnt even needed... This film can not even be slandered for mass amounts of gore either, simply because it was one of the first films to use the imagery effects of intestines being ripped out. This is an example of where it all came from in the film industry.
The only slight disadvantage to this film, is due to the cynical nature of the younger generation, who will look upon it, and even while there is indeed alot of gore there, it is admitedly not of very good quality due to it being one of the first to adopt the technique, and they may see it as slightly lame, yet for anyone else this is a sure hit in the horror section a must watch!! Especially if you are interested in the zombie genre, either this or The Night of the Living Dead would be an excellent starting point!

Advantages: Superb performances, visually stunning, an interesting take on the original tale. Disadvantages: Not the same social satire element as with the original.
