First up, I have to confess. I'm a massive Floyd fan and David is God to me. I would even say that I'm helplessly Devoted. So I'm tempted not to say much about the concert itself, because the very fact that it's called 'David Gilmour in Concert' is a dead give-away. I mean, it's David Gilmour, he's in concert, so, therefore, it's obviously a brilliant show! But I will pass comment in due course, so please bear with me.

The interactive DVD menus are very nice indeed. Call me fussy, but I do hate grappling with a crappy menu. The first menu screen features nice use of the 'Shine On' riff, each of the four notes prompting an option: Meltdown Concert - Stereo, Meltdown Concert - 5.1 Dolby, Track Selection and Features.

No need to explain the first two, so let's get straight on to Track Selection.

All 13 songs from this acclaimed 2001 Meltdown gig are here, as well as the three bonus tracks from David's January 2002 residency at London's Royal Festival Hall - 'Dominoes' and 'Breakthrough' (from Friday night's show, if my memory serves me well) and 'Comfortably Numb' (with Bob Geldof) from the Thursday.

Now we come to Features and, let's be honest, concert aside, this is what we've all been gagging for.

The music accompanying the Features menu is a lovely 'High Hopes' meets 'Je Crois Entendre Encore' combo, but that's of secondary importance to the content.

First on the list is Spare Digits, fretting hand close-ups of six solos ('Coming Back To Life', 'High Hopes', 'Breakthrough', 'Comfortably Numb', 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond', 'A Great Day For Freedom') designed primarily for guitar enthusiasts to marvel over how David's "fat little fingers" make it all look so darn easy.

Then it's Home Movie, or, in other words, David rehearsing in his home studio with the gospel choir. More on this later. Miscellaneous consists of 'I Put A Spell On You' with Mica Paris from Jools Holland's 1992 Roadrunner show, 'Don't' from the Leiber and Stoller tribute concert of June 2001, and last, but certainly not least, 'Sonnet 18' (David singing along to Michael Kamen's music on his houseboat with a mic stand in front of him and some beautiful shots of the river behind him).

There's also a choral version of 'High Hopes' (called High Hopes (choral), funnily enough), Lyrics (including 'Smile', 'The Dimming of the Day', and 'Hushabye Mountain' - you should already know the words to the all the Floyd-related stuff off by heart if you call yourself a Floyd fan!) and an interesting Sound Tester thingy-me-jig that suggests the most appropriate placement of your speakers, for those who have a full 5.1 system (to help avoid potential acoustic phase problems, or so it says here).

So, the Home Movie. This footage was filmed by David's charming wife, Polly, and is the first rehearsal in David's farmhouse studio. It starts with David being a cherub, singing 'Je Crois Entendre Encore', the choir of 250 (well, it seems as though there are that many in the choir) soon chiming in. If you're unfamiliar as to what Bizet's Pearl Fishers is all about, fear not because The Great One explains all. Apparently it's about two friends who have "agreed not to scrap over a bird, who just so happens to be a goddess, and this is him [the guy singing 'Je Crois Entendre Encore'] going 'F*ck, I gotta have her'. He knows it's gonna cause a scrap and their deaths and everything." Hmm.

There then follows a discussion between David and some of the girls about the best way to sing this tricky tune, David explaining how the man on the record sings it differently to how he prefers to sing it. Someone helpfully suggests that the choir will sing it however David wants them to sing it (damn right) but, after pondering on the alternative, the contemplation is brought to an end by David's blunt "F*ck Georges Bizet. He's dead, anyway" which makes everyone laugh.

As for the rest of the home movie, Sam Brown asks if everyone in the choir can fit "Oh souvenir charmant" in one breath. Claudia Fontaine giggles a lot. We briefly see a dog sniffing around and there are lots of bottles of Evian dotted around (I saw a bottle of Sunny Delight as well, which I hope David doesn't drink because too much of it as been known to turn people orange).

A little more practice and then, as if to show the world the finished product, we see a clip from Meltdown - and damn fine it is, too.

It's then back to rehearsals and a 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' sing-along (complete with swaying on the sofa) which ends with David playing the song out, his hands leaving the guitar a little too soon revealing that he was playing over the original track (or is it some sort of delay device?) and has been caught out. You hear Polly from behind the camera announce "No hands" and more laughter ensues. A clip of 'Shine On' is shown and then, sadly, it's all over. Great stuff.

I make no apologies for the blatant bias throughout this review as, the fact of the matter is, the DVD is faultless. Everything from the menus to the extras that had mouths watering in anticipation for months was thoroughly enjoyable and definitely worth waiting so long for... even worth tolerating the disappointments that inevitably followed each release date delay, EMI (joke).

The concert itself is truly amazing in its beauty, simplicity and intimacy. Everything from the lighting and camera work to the sound and production is sheer perfection - and that's not an exaggeration. As you'd expect with just about anything from the Floyd camp, David's latest offering is a gem and it's clear that a lot of time and preparation has gone into making it sparkle (a point that could go some way in supporting my insistence that David is Pink Floyd, perhaps?). Like PULSE, some might say that it's a bit too perfect (the innocent lyrical cock-up on 'Coming Back To Life' has been corrected and there are probably other examples of 'touching up' as well) but what can you say? The Great Man wants it to be just so; he is a perfectionist, after all.

The three bonus tracks ('Dominoes', 'Breakthrough' and 'Comfortably Numb') from David's three-day tenure at the Royal Festival Hall the following January should please fans who attended those shows (and had probably hoped that this DVD would actually be a Best Of January 2002 mini-tour instead of concentrating solely on the previous year's Meltdown). That said, something from Paris as well as, or instead of, one of the above wouldn't have gone amiss. There's no "Who gives a f*ck?" (in response to a wag asking when the next Floyd album will be out), but there's plenty of light-hearted banter throughout the gig, including the tale of how, in 1969, an electrical surge from David's mic stand left him in the drum kit, bless his cotton socks.

Personally, if I had to knit-pick, I'd have liked to have seen a bit more of the home movie, but that's just me being nuts about David (yes, there are some people who'd be quite happy watching him whitewash a fence, and I'm such a person). And, considering the running time - an already impressive 130 minutes - we've done pretty well out of this release, I say.

I would also have liked to have seen Kate Bush's 'Comfortably Numb' included as well as Bob Geldof's (Kate was the special guest on the third and final night's show - and the only one I did not attend). I think this would have been a fantastic treat for Kate's fans, seeing as they hadn't seen or heard much of her in a while.

Yet for these minor criticisms, I must say that this is a truly wonderful DVD and one you can watch time after time. With the semi-acoustic concert itself, you get an interesting new take on Floyd classics, a new song from David's forthcoming solo album ('Smile'), one of fellow-Floyd Richard Wright's tunes ('Breakthrough') and five fantastic covers, too (Syd Barrett's 'Terrapin' and 'Dominoes' , Richard Thompson's 'The Dimming of the Day', 'Je Crois Entendre Encore' from Bizet's opera, The Pearl Fishers, and 'Hushabye Mountain' - from the kids' film 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang'). Add the extras, and you've been treated very well indeed. I guess I'm just being greedy wanting more.

Extras aside, this release is about a damn fine concert (David's first all-out solo show since the About Face tour, don't forget), and if it hadn't been for Meltdown being such a tremendous success, hundreds of fans wouldn't have enjoyed five remarkable sell-out shows in early 2002. Hats off to David for being brave enough to embark upon such an ambitious project, incorporating cello and gospel choir instead of inflatable pig and lasers.

The tracks performed are: 'Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-5)', 'Terrapin', 'Fat Old Sun', 'Coming Back To Life', 'High Hopes', 'Je Crois Entendre Encore', 'Smile', 'Wish You Were Here', 'The Dimming of the Day', 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 6-8)', 'A Great Day for Freedom', 'Hushabye Mountain', 'Dominoes', 'Breakthrough' and 'Comfortably Numb'.

David's band includes the late Michael Kamen (on piano and cor anglais), Chucho Merchan (double bass), Caroline Dale (cello), Dick Parry (saxophone), Neill MacColl (acoustic guitar), Nic France (percussion) and Sam Brown (leading the choir, which includes several familiar faces to Floyd fans). There are also guest appearances from Richard Wright, Robert Wyatt and Bob Geldof. An impressive ensemble indeed.

2001's Meltdown was extremely well-received, as ticket sales for the January 2002 shows proved. Let's hope that the release of this eagerly-anticipated DVD will generate a similar response, with sales by the skip load, to make David realise that we're so very grateful for all his efforts when we know that, deep down, he just wants to live the quiet life on his farm with this family.

A well-know guitar magazine gave it five out of five. If I could, I'd give it six. "Excellent" seems such an understatement...
