Frank Langella has always been a classic baddie and there's certainly no change here, because as Dracula he might have been more visually evil, but as the corrupt Chief of Staff in the US government of President Bill Mitchell he's something far more loathsome, the despised power behind the throne which we all know and revile.
In a pretty slight retelling of the Prince and Pauper legend, Langella's is probably the most powerful performance, although Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver as Mr and Mrs President give their usual solid contributions. It's the slimy and totally unpleasant Langella, however, who dominates much of the better moments here.
Okay, intro over, on with the action...
The President's Men spot Dave Kovic, a small time entertainer with a small time act in carrying out impersonations of the most powerful man in the world. He has an uncanny resemblance to the Pres, understandably so because Our Kev plays both parts, just as he did in Fierce Creatures. Anyway, they come on with the old "Your country needs you..." routine and Dave is off to take his act onto the biggest stage in the world. he's the non speaking body double for President Mitchell while the nasty piece of work is off making the beast with two backs with his latest piece of bimbo fluff. Except, Nasty Bill has a stroke while on the job (and not a stroke of the flesh) and Nice Dave is catapulted by Langella into a long term role in the job because they clearly don't want the Vice Pres (an understated performance by Ben Kingsley) taking on the reins of power. After all that's Frankie's role and he clearly thinks a puppet in the House puts him firmly in the driving seat.
The frosty relationship between the Pres and Mrs Pres starts to thaw as there suddenly comes a sea change over the new Bill Mitchell, who accompanies her on her do gooder work with the homeless, reaching out to touch the unloved and unwashed in a much more human way than the Old Bill ever did. However, Frank soon stiffs this burgeoning romance by vetoing the funding for the homeless shelter they've just visited. He sneers that they can have their hostel back if Dave can plug the $650 million hole in the Budget.
Dave enlists the assistance of Charles Grodin a small town accountant acquaintance of his to do the necessary and amazingly Chuck and Dave do the business and lo and behold 650 million, just like taking candy off a baby. Frankie is well pissed off and decides to have his revenge and ...
Now that would be telling, so we'll leave it at that.
This is a neat and well observed film with some good performances and Kline coming over as a genuinely nice guy who takes to the big time like a duck to water. It's not particularly challenging or mind testing, but then this is Hollywood cinema.
PS There's a nice touch with a cameo performance from Oliver Stone as himself, expanding on his latest theory of conspiracies in high places... priceless!
Advantages: Shows you what a good president would be like Disadvantages: rubbish title
...USA has a stroke, but Dave has been standing in for him and the president has met him. Kevin Kline plays an excellent charecter who is warm and charming, everything the real preasident isn't. Sigourney Weaver plays the estranged wife, who has accepted that her husband will cheat with his secatrays. The chief of staff wants Dave to appoint him as vice president, so they employ Dave to take over after the president's stoke. Dave seems at first to be ... ...the homeless shelter, we see Dave spring into action and shave £600 million of the budget. He explains that its not a good idea spending 50 million dollars telling the Americans to feel good about a car they already have. The real vice president has been sent aw oay and set up by the chief of staff to take the rap for a scandal that the real president was involved in. This all comes to light when Dave sacks his chief of staff, who in turn names and ...

Advantages: Laugh out loud funny. Intelligent. Entertaining. Disadvantages: Not everyone will like the shouty, sweary style
) to create a stage show, DVD and book around it. You and I are not, however Dave Gorman.
Following his adventures in Googlewhacking (which interfered with the novel he was meant to have been writing. As far as I'm aware, it never was written), he had a few debts to pay (not least the advance on aforementioned novel). The stage show was the result of this. Fortunately for me, he invited cameras in on the Cardiff leg of said stage show, and this fine DVD is available for purchase. And purchase it you should.
Dave Gorman is a very talented raconteur. He is an intellectual everyman. Yes, I realise that sounds contradictory, but it is accurate. Whilst he can swear like a trooper, and (apparently) drink like a fish, he is clearly very well read and very bright. He is also extremely articulate, and so you find yourself able to visualise ...
Advantages: Dave Allen fans will love it Disadvantages: Don't pay the BBC (see review)
the BBC or ITV, companies for whom he had worked, on and off, for 28 years before retiring. Let's face it, if Alan Bl#*$y Titchmarsh stubbed his toe, there would be twelve hours of programming in tribute and a televised appeal for all those 'foot-damaged' victims out there. Why? Because he isn't controversial, because he doesn't push the boundaries, because he is safe.
Dave Allen was none of those things, and instead of a series of tributes, his passing was completely ignored.
Except for the release of this DVD. (You were wondering, weren't you.)
Dave Allen, for all those of you who were living in either a box or a womb for the past 40 years, was the original alternative comedian. He had a very unorthodox style, sitting on a high stool, swearing, drinking whisky and chain-smoking cigarettes.
Neither did he 'tell jokes' to any great ...
Advantages: Learn from a Master Disadvantages: No Menu
England International match angler Dave Harrell explains all about carp fishing, using three different styles of feeder rigs, in this dvd. So if you want to bag up on carp like he does, then learn from the master.
Location
Castle Ashbury lakes, near Northampton.
Set Up
You should always have all your tackle to hand when fishing in this style. It is pointless having to move from your seat to get a piece of equipment, so plan ahead. The more efficient you are the better your results will be. If a large head of fish move into your swim you need to keep them there. If you have to keep getting up for your catapult and bait etc. you will miss bites, but if everything is at hand you will know immediately if you get a take because your rod will be in your hand at all times.

DVD Description
A presidential look-alike finds himself in the oval office "filling in" for the president who has fallen ill. Lacking the political savvy of the real president, "Dave" proceeds to govern the country with a refreshingly straight-forward approach. Academy Award Nominations: Best (Original) Screenplay.
