What an excellent dvd i have seen this as a mini series, video and failed to find it a boring film/series. I have seen it with subtitles as this is how it first appeared on CH 4 i think back in 1985.
The director Wolfgang Petersen captured everything in a unique way with perfection and realism, and return he has done the book proud, the author Lothar G Buchheim should be well chuffed with Wolfgangs interpretation.
I have personal knowledge of ww2 in a submarine through my grandad through many years of his stories and thoughts on his time he served on the subs.
Though this film is based on the German u boat side of the war it does not take alot to realise that both sides faced the same ordeals as each other.
In this film what becomes clear is the Mental and phsyical ordeals, thoughts and actions are what happened to the real heros of ww2, it does not matter who side who was on as all suffered the same torment and perils, like having to follow orders even though they knew it was wrong, or not they would choose.
I am trying to be as vague as possible about the film on purpose as this is a definate film to watch, the only downside is finding the 4 hrs needed to watch it all in piece and quiet, but this is why dvd's are excellent because you can pause them and make tea, dinner, put the kids to bed and then carry on with watching.
The Captain in this is played by a good actor who suits the part well you can almost feel and see the anquish on his face and in his actions.
The sound and picture effects are good and the storyline is based on what all u boat crews and officers did during ww2.
This is ideally suited to those who have a genuine interest in maritime warfare or who just wonders how bad and what it was like back then.
I now know that the horror look on my grandads face as he was tell me what life was like must have been a burden to live with.
All i can say is wether you buy this dvd or the video or even the book i doubt you will be dis-appointed.
Out of all the war films i have seen this takes alot of beating.
One thing came clear to me and that was that no matter what side they were on everyone lost something either phsyical but probably more of a mental thing back then we were all loosers of something.

A very nice review. I especially like the name of your review. Many people think the film is about a Boot when they glance at the title. -=- Hoethir -=-
