parts but here edited into a seamless whole. Director Wolfgang Petersen has since graduated to mega-budget Hollywood productions (2004'sTroyfor example), but has never managed even to come close to this, his German-language masterpiece. Petersen and his sterling cast (including Jürgen Prochnow in his best role as the U-boat captain) went to great lengths to ensure that this claustrophobic depiction of life aboard the German sub U-97 while attacking British convoys in the Atlantic is thoroughly authentic and totally convincing. Even the set itself, which is a replica of a U-boat interior, had no false walls, so all camera angles are necessarily from within its horribly narrow, overcrowded and sweaty confines. The result is certainly the finest submarine drama ever made, and one of the most compelling depictions of the physical, psychological and emotional effects of warfare. This mini-series is rather longer than the movie version, which is also available on DVD in a Director's Cut version. The differences are not in matters of plot, but in the pacing: everything here takes longer to happen, while the crew must sit around, bicker, swear and sweat it out--the agonising searching for action, the tension of the attack, the terrible stress of hiding from enemy destroyers. Everything unfolds as if in real time, which is the great advantage a TV production has over a movie (contrast, for example,Band of BrotherswithSaving Private Ryan). This, therefore, is the definitive presentation of a World War II classic. On the DVD:Das Bootis presented on two discs, with no breaks where the original TV episodes started and finished. The default language option is German with optional English subtitles. For those constitutionally allergic to subtitles there is also an alternative English-language dub, voiced by many of the original cast (including Prochnow). Sound is adequate stereo or Dolby 5.1, and the anamorphic widescreen is good for the murky green underwater shots. Unlike the theatrical version, though, there is no commentary. --Mark Walker

I have personal knowledge of ww2 in a submarine through my grandad through many years of his stories and thoughts on his time he served on the subs.
Though this film is based on the German u boat side of the war it does not take alot to realise that both sides faced the same ordeals as each other.
In this film what becomes clear is the Mental and phsyical ordeals, thoughts and actions are what happened to the real heros of ww2, it does not matter who side who was on as all suffered the same torment and perils, like having to follow orders even though they knew it was wrong, or not they would choose.
I am trying to be as vague as possible about the film on purpose as this is a definate film to watch, the only downside is finding the 4 hrs needed to watch it all in piece and quiet, but this is why dvd's are excellent because you can pause them and make tea, dinner, put the kids to bed and then carry on with watching.
The Captain in this is played by a good actor who suits the part well you can almost feel and see the anquish on his face and in his actions.
The sound and picture effects are good and the storyline is based on what all u boat crews and officers did during ww2.
This is ideally suited to those who have a genuine interest in maritime warfare or who just wonders how bad and what it was like back then.
I now know that the horror look on my grandads face as he was tell me what life was like must have been a burden to live with.
All i can say is wether you buy this dvd or the video or even the book i doubt you will be dis-appointed.
Out of all the war films i have seen this takes alot of beating.
One thing came clear to me and that was that no matter what side they were on everyone lost something either phsyical but probably more of a mental thing back then we were all loosers of something.

DVD Description
DAS BOOT is widely considered to be director Wolfgang Petersen's best film, but this mini-series edit presented as a feature length movie, is perhaps even more stunningly realistic in its portrayal of the cramped conditions aboard a German submarine. Based on a novel by Lothar G. Buchheim, it is a striking example of an intelligent antiwar film clothed in the guise of a military thriller. In the midst of World War II, a German U-boat crew is sent out to patrol the Atlantic and fire at Allied ships bringing supplies to England. The submarine also carries a press correspondent, there to report from the front lines of nautical warfare. Meanwhile, the crew's captain (Jurgen Prochnow) is becoming disillusioned with the Nazi regime and with war in general. What starts out as a routine mission is soon livened up beyond the crew's expectations when their boat's surprise attack on a convoy is thwarted by a fast-moving destroyer. Battered by depth charges, the crew must pull together to survive the attacks of their unseen enemy.
