I'm sure there are some deep underlying moral stories in the film but try not to be analytical. Just enjoy the film. The Henson work shop was excelled itself here. The special effects are fantastic. Try not to watch the making of documentary before you view the film or it will ruin the magic. I'm sure I read that this story was going to be part of the original star wars film (but then again I could have just dreamt it). A great family film but some younger children might be scared as it is quite dark in places.
Advantages: Everything! Disadvantages: Far too often overlooked
I was raised on the innovative form of animation given to us by the marvelous Jim Henson. From Kermit the Frog to the goblins in the Labyrinth, this creative genius managed to invent creatures and worlds of such depth, wonder, and jocularity that they will be delighting audiences of all ages for years to come! Sadly, Henson is no longer with us although the Jim Henson Company continues to delight and amaze, and while the creator himself will be sorely missed, his creations remain to comfort us.
DarkCrystal is a brilliant and daring piece of Henson’s work that is often overlooked. Development for this film began in 1977 although shooting did not start until 1981, and it wasn’t released until 1982. Henson was so taken with the illustrations of Brian Froud, that he asked Froud to create an elaborate visual world in which he ...
Advantages: It's a mysterious, magical fantasy Disadvantages: It is actually creepy in parts!
The DarkCrystal - Collectors Edition.
I loved this film as a child. I remember being both intrigued and fascinated by the elf-like fantasy, and also scared and left a little confused from the creepy skeksis!
I have this on video and it was by strange coincidence I was chatting to someone about the film, so imagine my delight when I picked the Special Collectors Edition up from ASDA at £5.67. Yes, it really was that low!
#Background
The film involves an entire cast of puppets who are lifelike and realistic. When I say puppets I mean the half bodies or people in rather large suits, not the string types! This film is a Jim Henson creation and directed by Frank Oz.
The film follows closely to a mythical, dark storyline where there is a fantastical journey to save the land from evil. The film involves adventure, friendship ...
Advantages: 3 great films from the Jim Henson Company Disadvantages: A little dark in nature for some children
A fabulous box set containing the two classic Jim Henson Fantasy movies Labyrinth and The DarkCrystal, as well as the more modern, stunningly produced, and often overlooked movie of magic that is Mirrormask. A must buy item for anybody who is a fan of well made fantasy films, that ooze with magic and imagination! All three movies are suitable for children, but the dark undertones and hilarious comedy will appeal to adults just as much if not more!
MIRRORMASK
Written and directed by two incredibly talented individuals, Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman, who's talents normally lie within the realms of the graphic novel world; Mirrormask tells the tale of a young girl called Helena who is miserable in her life as part of a circus, run by her family. Shut away in her trailer, she dreams of another life, using her drawings to create ...
A luxuriant live-action fantasy inhabited by alien beings and set in a world without light. Jen, the last survivor of an elfin-like race, sets to the task of returning a crystal shard to the all-powerful dark crystal, making it whole again and restoring light to the world.

DVD Description
A fantastical, puppet-filled adventure, this tale co-directed by Muppet creator Jim Henson and Frank Oz reveals the story of Jen, a young Gelfling boy chosen by prophecy to mend the Dark Crystal, which broke 1,000 years ago and plunged the land under the dominion of the evil, quarrelsome Skeksis. Fearing the prophecy, whose fulfillment would mean the end of their reign, the Skeksis exterminated the Gelflings--all but Jen and Kira, a girl he meets on his journey to the crystal. Pursued by the Skeksis and their dark creatures, Jen and Kira race to the crystal, even as their time runs out.
