more...the Dark Crystal, which broke 1,000 years ago and plunged the land under the dominion of the evil, quarrelsome Skeksis. Fearing the prophecy, whose fulfillment would mean the end of their reign, the Skeksis exterminated the Gelflings--all but Jen and Kira, a girl he meets on his journey to the crystal. Pursued by the Skeksis and their dark creatures, Jen and Kira race to the crystal, even as their time runs out.

The Dark crystal is set one thousand years ago, and there was a pure crystal which got shattered and was reassembled but a shard of the crystal went missing , and because the crystal would only be pure again once the shard was found the crystal was infamously known as the dark crystal from then on.this then divides the world into two halves where one side is controlled by the evil vulture looking skekses [skek-seas] and the other is occupied by the peace-keeping mystics.

there was an ancient prophecy made that if the crystal was going to become pure once agian and the evil occupants of the world overthrown then a member of the gelfling race could only do so.Therefore the skekses over a thousand years hunted the gelflingd down and killed every known member of the gelflings.

The only known member of the gelflings was a young boy named jen who was taken in and protected by the mystics. Now there is only 10 members each of the skekses and the mystics, and when the three suns cme into conjuction soon the crystal mmust be whole again or else the world will be conquered by the evil skekses.

so jen must now leave the protection of the mystics to go and heal the crystal. Jen has to journey through mysterious and strange lands seeking help of unknown creatures. I won't spoil the ending for you now, but all i will say that there are a few more suprises for jen along the way.

all in all a very good film for all ages!
