I went to watch Daredevil with a friend at the local cinema last weekend. I was relieved that this film was a far darker look to the Marvel comic books. The film did have that 'Batman' feel to it and was a relief after last summers colourful, child friendly 'Spider-Man'.
As you may know, Mavel Comic Books have all of a sudden become 'hot property' and are being bought up left, right and centre by film studios because everyone seems to think that because "X-Men" back in 2000 was a box office smash, that all Marvel Comic Book adaptations will be a smash. That's not necessarily the case as some truely poor films have spawed because of this current Hollywood fad; "Batman & Robin", "Hulk" etc etc etc. However, "Daredevil" conveys a more dark and violent tone compared to other adaptations. Could this film be the new "Batman" after a great start by Tim Burton in 1989 to a diabolical D.O.A effort made by Franchise assassin Joel Schumacher? All the pieces are there to make a gritty and compelling story. Let's continue to the story...
As you may have guessed, the film is centred around the famous and mysterious Marvel Comicbook character Dardevil (Ben Affleck "Pearl Harbour", "Good Will Hunting") whose real identity is a lawyer, Matt Murdock. Murdock went blind at the age of twelve due to a chemical accident, but he was somewhat compensated with his remaining four senses being increased to superhuman status. It is then he becomes Daredevil, Lawyer by day, Jury by night as he prowls the city looking for those who get away clean in the courtroom. So far so good, we meet the Daredevil who seems to have a ill respect for human life when scumbags are involved.
Instead of making a guy fall onto a subway track and get sliced in two by an oncoming train, if left in the hands of your friendly Neighbourhood "Spider-man", he would have stuck him to a pillar covered in sticky webbing for the police to conviently find.
The dark tone then changes when we discover that Murdock has bumbling legal friends who are purely written in for comic relief and to gain more weight toward and poorly written back story. One day, Murdock and his lawyer friend Franklin 'Foggy' Nelson (Jon Favreau) are in the local coffee shop/diner, restaurant establishment. Murdock meets the love of his life, Elektra Natchios (Jennifer Garner - TV's "Allias"). Sparks fly, blah blah blah...
Elektra's father Nikolas Natchios (Erick Avari - "The Mummy") is an associate of Wilson Fish, aka The Kingpin (Michael Clark "take my hands boss" Duncan - "The Whole Nine Yards", "Armageddon") the crimelord of New York City and the murderer of Daredevil's father. The back story is shown at the beginning of the film and we realise that it is Daredevil's quest to avenge his father's death by killing The Kingpin. After. To do away with Natchois after some disagreement, The Kingpin has hired the talent of Irish assassin, Bullseye (Colin Farrell - "Phone Booth", "SWAT") who can throw or shoot anything with deadly pin point precision. As he assassinates Elektra's father, Elektra thinks that it was Daredevil's doing, unaware that he is in fact her lover...
Performances are reasonable for a film of this caliber: Affleck seems a little uncomfortable as the red leather sporting hero or anti hero (the director couldn't quite decide either). During day-time scenes when he is allowed to wear normal clothes, he is somewhat better. I don't really condier him to be the superhero type and wasn't exactly won over. However I was convinced concerning his disability (blindness) at some points. Although there were lots of moments where I thought it was a complete shame. It could be more the scripts fault as well as Affleck's but both parties in question seem somewhat frustrated. Affleck's natural frustration plays to his advantage in this film. Could you live without your eyesight? The script however has no good reason for its frustration: "We want to make a dark, brooding, almost gothic story but we wish to involve romance in its most cheesiest form and kill everyone yet keep them alive at the same time so we can do an endless string of sequels to rake in the cash".
The curvaceous Jennifer Garner also seems a little awkward play rich man's daughter-cum-vigilante Elektra. It's not her acting talent thats to blame, its the fact that she takes it too seriously. As does everyone I feel. Michael Clark Duncan seems a little miscast as Wilson Fisk: The Kingpin. Although he has the physique the Mavel Comic Book Kingpin possesses, his face looks too friendly to be the face of a ruthless crime king. Joe Pantoliano makes the odd in and out appearance as jounalist Ben Urich, who's been folowing up on the Daredevil vigilante incidents that have occured and the theory (that is in actual fact reality) about one man in control of all crime in the city (Kingpin). Pantoliano's performance is acceptable and at times quite good.
Collin Farrell is probably the highlight of the movie playing the pyshcotic Bullseye, he is very entertaining to watch and his methods of killing (these include using broken stainglass, paper clips and pencils) is very fun and he clearly had fun making the film, the other characters seem a little to ridged and seem to be taking it too seriously. You can blantantly see that Farrell is there for a laugh and this shows in his character, a nice touch.
The film has some comedy value which makes it feel lighter. The director (Mark Steven Johnson) seemed a little confused about what to do with the film. Although there was some clever use with the camera, he didn't really know what direction to take. The action sequence that takes place in the Bar was directed rather poorely as his use of 'sonar vision' was overused a liitle. Another thing, there was a random fight sequence in a city playground to which I can't find a real reason for. It was as if the director was flicking through the script and wanting to fill in time by adding a blatent martial arts sequence. I don't think it is quite the 'Masterpiece' they say it was on the TV. The end fight between Daredevil and the infamous Kingpin felt short changed as with the other action sequences leading up to that 'climax'.
Soundtrack was feasable, costume was reasonably impressive for a film where cape crusaders run around fighting people, costume is key. The Daredevil outfit does look quite cool whilst Elektra's ensemble looks more like that she's gogin to a fancy dress party.
Not trying to give away too much concerning the ending, but it was left totally wide open for a sequel and then again (not wanting to spoil it) it wasn't. The director wasn't sure exactly how to conlude it. I shall repeat: "We want to make a dark, brooding, almost gothic story but we wish to involve romance in its most cheesiest form and kill everyone yet keep them alive at the same time so we can do an endless string of sequels to rake in the cash".
BOTTOM LINE Daredevil wasn't bad, it's the kind of film that doesn't require too much thinking. It doesn't have the almighty WOW factor that 'Spider-Man' may of had with its audience, but it does convey a more violent, down to earth approach that hasn't really been seen since 'Batman'. But I consider 'Batman' to be far better. It is dark and broading and the setting of New York City (a location used in most Mavel Comics) works very well. The film had many ideas that either were overused or not used enough. Daredevil could have been ten minutes longer and twice as good.
CERTIFICATE : 15 TIME APPROX : 103 minutes
CAUTION some strong violence some mild sexual references
IF YOU LIKE THIS TRY : Batman - Tim Burton turns the camp 60's TV show into a dark, brooding fantasy classic
You're good, baby, I'll give you that... but me? I'm magic.
