better of the two but both of them made for passable entertainment with some spectacular special effects to serve as icing on the stale cake. After all,Dante's Peakdoesn't pretend to be anything more than an updated variation on a whole catalogue of disaster movie clichés. Despite all that, it's reasonably enjoyable. It's an added bonus that the script is just smart enough to allow Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton to play their roles with straight faces, never condescending to the audience of the formulaic story. He's a volcano expert from the US Geological Survey, and she's the mayor of a cosy WashingtonState town perched beneath a volcano that's about to blow. Tell-tale signs are everywhere, so evacuation must be carried out immediately. Of course, not everybody's eager to leave and even some of Brosnan's colleagues think his alarm is premature. This sets the stage for massive ash clouds, rivers of raging mud and molten rock, flattened forests and death-defying escapes by Brosnan, Hamilton and some (but not all) of her family, friends and townsfolk. So what if it's all pretty flaky ... and can a four-wheel-drive vehicle travel over fire and molten lava without bursting its tires? Storyline. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Volcanologist Harry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan)is sent by his boss Paul Dreyfus (Charles Hallahan) to investigate some unusually seismic readings at Dante's Peak. When Harry Dalton arrives, the Mayor Rachel Wando(Linda Hamilton) has agreed to take him up the mountain to take some new reading of his own. Sure enough, in Harry's opinion the volcano is active and going to erupt so he asks the Mayor to call a town meeting. Just as he is trying to get the town to agree to evacuate his boss Paul and the rest of the team arrive and stop the planned evacuation. Harry is outraged as he is convinced but instead of leaving as his boss has told him, he sticks around for more than just the volcano. Sure enough Harry is right and soon the town find themselves in the thick of a full blown eruption but as Harry tries to get Rachel to leave with him she discovers her two children Lauren (Jamie Renee Smith) and Graham (Jeremy Foley) have gone up the mountain to get there grandmother Ruth (Elizabeth Hoffman) to leave. Harry and Rachel are then sent on a race against time to rescue her children and her ex-mother-in law from the clutches of the lava and volcanic ash. They manage to get to Ruth and the children but they are then set to the fact that, there way down has been blocked. Does Harry save the day and safely rescue Rachel, Lauren, Graham and Ruth from the clutches of a volcanic eruption, you will have to watch and find out.
The Director ~~~~~~~~~~~~ The director Roger Donaldson has done a fantastic job of bringing together this film and turning it into a highly enjoyable action / adventure. The cast and crew seem to have all worked extremely well, under his directing and the effects of the film are of the highest quality. He has not failed in his task of directing an excellent film again for us as we have seen this from him before in such films as `Cadillac Man`, `The Recruit`, `White Sands` and `Thirteen Days`.
The Acting / My Opinion. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When you see the performance from Pierce Brosnan in this film, it is easily understandable why he shot to fame with his acting capabilities. He portrays his character fantastically and manages to prove that his fame is not just down to his handsome good looks. Linda Hamilton shows she has a quality all her own in her performance showing yet again that even though she shot to fame for her performance in the terminator it was not down to the fact that the film made her famous, but that she truly knows how to give a character the appeal it needs whenever required. Jamie Renee Smith and Jeremy Foley show the promise of an excellent career ahead of them in the acting roles they portray giving the children a unique appeal all of there own in this film. All the other cast all act out there parts fantastically and make it as a team to be an extremely enjoyable watch.
Summary. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Yet another Disaster film spun out in the late 90's when they all seemed to enjoy making the world seem a nicer place by throwing one after another disaster film down our throats. Still in my opinion this is one of the more enjoyable one as the actors all play there parts fantastically and the film has some outstanding special effects. To anyone out there that thinks they can stomache watching another natural disater movie, I highly recommend you view this film and give it 8/10 for entertainment value.

Dante’s Peak
I probably would never have watched this movie had I not been on a boat to somewhere (probably France) with my parents and felt the need to do something to reduce the boredom and give me something to do. On the whole I have to say that it’s not a bad movie and it was an enjoyable experience, but when I had it bought for me later that year by my parents and I watched it another few times, I realised that this movie really didn’t have ... ...never going to be up there in anyone’s top 100.
It is your traditional clichéd story of a peaceful, beautiful little town somewhere in the great country of America that is just about to win an award for being the second most desirable holiday destination in the state, when suddenly some people take a bath in a volcanic pool, which is now acid and in come the boys – Pierce Brosnan: Ace Volcanologist and Crew. Initially they think that the volcano ...

...We also had Volcano and Dante's Peak. Volcano takes the typically Hollywood approach - big budget, special effects and a plot that is so ridiculous it is more like a comedy. Dante's Peak on the other hand is a far more realistic affair which makes it the better of the two. Volcanoligist Harry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan) is sent out to the small town of Dante's Peak to investigate the dormant volcano that overlooks them. He advises the town is put on ... ...eruption. He is eventually proved correct and the mountain blows. He then has to help the Mayor Rachael Wando (Linda Hamilton) save her children who went up the mountain to save thier Gran. The acting in this film is excellent. Pierce Brosnan proves that he isn't just Bond and manages to fill this different role very well. He portrays the volcanoligist side of his character superbly making you believe he actually knows what he is talking about. He ...

Dante's peak. Nice little town. Nice little people. Amazing volcano. We watched this in Geography as part of our study of volcanoes. Can't say that about many films, but my teacher was incredibly quick to point out: 'You would never find a volcano like that in real life.' Hmmph. Volcanoes have many features - ash rain, lava, pyroclastic flows, acid lakes, bombs, hot springs - but never all at once. Evidently volcanoes that spew runny lava like on ... ...Anyway, back to the film.
The Story
Nice little town, nice little people, dormant volcano. Well, it was until Pierce Brosnan roared into town. Using spectacular judgement, he says ' nO, its not not dormant. Whats more, its gonna blow!! HAHAHHAHA'.Then his boss says 'Calm it Brosnan. Thats not true. This town can't take this - property values would go down and so forth.' So what happens? Yup, it blows - and Bond - woops, make that Harry(Brosnan) ...

Dante's Peak is about a Volcano in a small American fictional town of Dante's Peak (see what they did there?!). The volcano has bee dormant for hundreds of years. The film is loosely based on the real-life eruptions of Mount St Helens in 1980 & Mount Pinatubo in 1991. The director wanted the eruptions to look as life like as possible & you can really see the effort put in, in the film. Pierce Brosnan plays Harry Dalton, ...

Advantages: Pierce Brosnan Disadvantages: A little predictable
Dantes Peak is about a small town in America that lives in the shadows of a volcano. Pierce Brosnan is a geologist sent to the town to investigate whether the volcano is about to blow. As usual the townspeople led by Linda Hamilton who plays the local mayor refuse to believe that anything will happen (this was a little predictable) but are rescued in the nick of time.
All the characters were excellent, the special effects were out of this world ...

Advantages: Gripping Disadvantages: Corny at times, not much characterisation
Dr Harry Walton is sent to Dante's Peak, a small town in rural America, to investigate some abnormal activity in a nearby volcano. He becomes convinced that the volcano is about to erupt, but as the town has now become a desirable place to live, his views are not politically welcome and his boss asks him to back off. Despite this, the attraction between Harry and local mayoress, Rachel Wando, grows. Just as he is about to leave, more dangerous activity is monitored - the only problem is that there isn't going to be time to evacuate the town before the volcano erupts. Even worse, Rachel's children seem to have disappeared up the mountain to rescue their stubborn grandmother. Is Harry's warning too late? And can he and Rachel rescue the children before they are buried under a tonne of lava?
Disaster films are really not my cup of tea ...
Advantages: Good Effects, Plenty of Action Disadvantages: A little predictable
Pierce Brosnan, of James Bond fame, takes the male lead as Dr Harry Walton a seismologist, who is sent to a small American town to closely observe a volcano which he believes is due to erupt although his bosses totally disagree, none the less he and a small team head off.
The team aren't exactly made welcome in the town which relies almost soley on tourism for income and after a few weeks of observation the volcano appears to be dormant but just as they go leave there is significant volcanic activity and it is soon clear that an erruption is not very far away, so close in fact that getting the town evacuated is not going to be easy. Walton's mind immediately springs to the safety of the town mayoress, Rachel Wando (played by Linda Hamilton) who in his short time in Dante's Peak he has started to fall for, and her 2 young children ...
