This is possibly one of the greatest movies of all time, and it is definetly a favourite of mine at christmas time when it's on the telly. Not many moves have the capability to move me like Dances With Wolves did, and that is probably why I think this is amazing.
This epic film stars Kevin Costner who plays the part of Lieutenant John J Dunbar. It's about the story of a young American soldier who mans his post in the strange new lamd, the American frontier. He is rewarded for herosim in the Civil War battlefield by being able to choose what post he wants to man in the army (not much of a reward I thought). He chose the western frontier. When arriving on his post, he finds that it is deserted fort on the Dakota prairie. He accepts his duties as a solider and he decides to repair and clean up the fort and wait for reinforcements with his only companians, his horse and a curious wolf which he named two-socks. Also there are neighboring Sioux to look out for as they will kill him if they find him as a threat.
After a few events, soldier and Sioux overcome their mutual distrust as Dunbar makes the first move as he proves his courage and the fact that not all soldiers (or at least him) mean them no harm and therefore he is accepted into the tribe. Through the friendship of a medicine man, he learns the way of the Sioux and through the friendship of a warrior, he finds the love of a remarkable woman. Dunbar finally finds that place in life where all the blanks are filled in as he loves the way of the Sioux and now he is forced to make the hardest choice of his life. He has to chose weather or not to join the losing battle of the indians or remian as the faithful and dedicated soldier he once was.
If you haven't seen this movie yet, I think it is a definite must. I feel that this movie has deep emotional and powerful messages contained in it. I find it makes me feel more aware on the suitation between native Americans (indians) and the 'white man', just a pity it is too late. THis is definitely a movie for the entire family.
In my opinion, towards the end of the movie, you will experience one of the most touching and memorable scenes in the movie making world.. Just as Dunbar is leaving the Winter camp and saying goodbye to the Sioux he loved so much forever, the voice of a past enemy screams through the air, bringing him to a halt. You see "Wind in His Hair' sitting on his pony on a mountain and he screams out his message that he could not deliver in person. I find that this makes a very touching ending.
To find out what happens in the film and how Dunbar got the name 'Dances With Wolves', you'll have to watch it as it's one of the greatest movies of all time. My greatest thanks goes out to Kevin Costner for his amazing acting and to the author Micheal Blake.

Advantages: interesting story Disadvantages: the love story part
WHAT IS IT ABOUT: Kevin Costner stars as Lt John Dunbar, a hero of the American Civil War who travels to his new post on the Western frontier. At first an emotionless, up tight soldier, things soon change as he begins to interact with a tribe of Sioux Indians, causing him to re-evaluate his loyalties.
WAS IT ANY GOOD:
I just re-watched this last night, and have to say I still enjoyed it just as much as I did when it came out in 1990. Costner plays ... ...all play into his strengths and he does a good job. Ironically, Dunbar in the first hour is a very unlikable guy - a nerd, a workaholic, a goody goody who can't relax or have fun, and although this is used to show the extent of his later changes, it's funny to quite dislike the hero of a film for the first half.
The movie was trying to be profound and I don't think it quite reached that - Costner's soundbite narration over the top is often naïve ...

...to be given Kevin Costners Dances With Wolves. The story is straight forward, Costner plays John Dunbar, a lieutenant in the Cival War who is rewarded for an act of heroism with the posting of his choice. In Dances with Wolves, they are as filled out and have as much depth as any of the other parts, their ways, lives, loves and fears are played with reality and humour, with honest and insight and for the first time we see the other side of the coin. The interactions between Dunbar and the Sioux are well thought out, these are meant to be two races that have no experience of each other, and as such are cautious and curious of ...

Advantages: Fantastic visuals, Costner Disadvantages: Can draw it out too long in places
Often considered one of Kevin Costner's most powerful films to date, Dances With Wolves is a thoughtful and emotional tale that requires a bit of concentration. Set in the aftermath of the Civil War, it features KC as a war hero who is relocated to a post near a tribe of Sioux Indians.
The initial grasp of the film makes you think it's going to be one with emphasis on the conflict involving the Sioux, and for the first part of the film, this is indeed how it is shown, particularly as KC's character, Lt Dunbar, is portrayed as an arrogant and selfish man, very naive in a way and also very much a Jobsworth.
However, the film's progression sees us follow Dunbar as he interacts with the Sioux, and little by little he begins to understand them and their beliefs, and seeks to achieve mutual respect and co-habitation. This is ...

This film is one which hubby really wanted to see but it had never really appealed to me but once I found out it was Kevin Costner who played the lead I was swayed slightly so decided to treat him to the DVD.
John Dunbar is serving in the US Army and it is the 1860?s. He gets badly injured and is told he will loose his foot. As a last resort he manages to get away from the hospital an makes his way to a post where the high ranking officers are and after he shows bravery and courage, he really just wanted to be killed, he is treated by their doctors and his foot and leg are saved. As a result he is promoted to Lieutenant and told he can serve at any post he wants.
Dunbar decides he wants to go to the Frontier and see it before it is lost so off he sets but he soon discovers that the men their have all been killed so he sets camp up ...

DVD Description
In 1865, Civil War hero Lt. John Dunbar asks to be reassigned to the western frontier before it disappears. At his isolated post he develops a relationship with the peaceful Lakota Sioux and a white woman who lives among them, finding greater kinship with them than with his own people.
