hubristic way; yet it is such a resonant and powerful film that we can almost forgive him for inflicting upon us his later "epic" The Postman. Here Costner plays a Union solder stationed at the far edges of the West, and left there to rot at his post. He finally sees the wisdom of the Lakota Sioux and finds peace within their community. But his decision to "go native" is greatly frowned upon by his military commanders, and the subsequent culture clash forms the backbone of the narrative. The story is told simply, and wastes not one word of dialogue, while the South Dakota locations provide a magnificent backdrop. Costner is sympathetic and accessible as an American Everyman who awakens to himself and the world around him... --Rochelle O'Gorman, Amazon.com
western, Dances with Wolves, is nothing short of a modern classic by a film scoring master. Utilising Wagnerian structure, Barry's three main themes recur in magisterial symphonic form. The memorable "John Dunbar" theme alone has become an almost subconscious part of modern life, utilised as Muzak and underscore for public events great and small. Barry's skills as an arranger colour his themes in subtly shifting orchestral hues, giving even the most repeated melodic passages new emotional weight. Barry's rich music is living proof that the art of orchestral film scoring not only survived into, but thrived in the 1990s. --Jerry McCulley

It portrays a lieutenant (Kevin Costner) caught up in the American civil war, who is tired of fighting and wants to see the American frontier before its gone.
He dices with death taunting the enemy grey coats to shoot him to end his anguish ... ...an act of courage and he is given an assignment of his choosing.
Of course, he ends up in a remote fort on the frontier and meets the local Native American Sioux tribe who are his only neighbours.
There are several funny moments when he tries to communicate with the Sioux, who he befriends, and falls in love with a white woman raised by the tribe.
He learns a lot about the Sioux and the hardships they face in their everyday struggle for survival.
