How did my friend say? “Not as funny, as I expected, but that film was cute!” So I went to see it myself and I am happy, I did. And I have to agree. The story is not really new: Two men are loosing their jobs, their women therefore start a career and leave the inexperienced and a bit helpless men at home with the children. But the bored men have a great idea to open a kindergarten (“What can a woman, what a man couldn’t!”) and become a real competition for the owner of a noble kindergarten. The best jokes are already known from the preview. But still, I couldn’t stop giggling and we had really good fun.
Let me give you a short summary of the story (without telling too much!): Charly (Eddy Murphy) and his colleague Phil (Jeff Garlin) try to bring Vegie O’s cereal on the children breakfast market, which obviously fails. The campaign is cancelled on both find themselves without a job. Therefore the mothers decide to go back to work. It is nearly impossible to find an acceptable kindergarten. Apart from the very noble (and expensive) Chapman academy, where children already have to learn philosophy and languages, there are only a bit scaring ones. But the creative daddies have a great idea: „Let’s open an own kindergarten!“ You can imagine, that this idea creates some quite funny presented problems: A little boy not understanding how to use the toilet, another not leaving the house without a superhero dress and of course the owner of the Chapman Academy (Anjelica Huston) making the live of the daddies as difficult as she can. But without this problems it would only be half as funny! In one sentence: The film is really cute. Kurz gesagt, der Film ist echt süß. The reproachful look from Charlie’s sun on it own, telling clearly that his daddy has no clue how to deal with children, is worth a visit to the cinema. The film brings a good laugh for everyone in the cinema – adult or still a child. Of course you can’t expect anything highly demanding. It’s just a film for the complete family, just for relaxing and having fun.
A few words about the actors: I wasn’t too impressed with Anjelica Huston as the noble kindergarten owner. The role was obviously planned to be a bit “over the top”, but I just like it when it still appears a bit more realistic. Eddy Murphy and Jeff Garlin did a good job. Their have been better films with more laughs Eddy played, but given the relatively “old and normal” topic, it was very good presented. Technical data: no minimum age, length about 90 minutes. Main actors: Eddie Murphy, Jeff Garlin, Steve Zahn, Regina King, Anjelica Huston
