With school holidays here again, Eddie Murphy returns with yet another light-weight family comedy.
In Daddy Day Care, Murphy and Jeff Garlin play Charlie and Phil, two surburban dads who decide to set up their own child day care centre, after losing their high-flying jobs in advertising.
This causes problems with a local pre-school teacher who starts losing her students to the competition and the Daddys soon start to wonder which is the bigger challenge, the horde of naughty kids or the evil Mrs Harridan, played by Angelica Houston.
The days of Beverley Hills Cop and The Golden Child seem a million miles away, as Murphy returns in another movie for, as he puts it, his own kids to watch. One can only hope, for Murphy's sake, that the recent rumours of Beverley Hills Cop IV, are more than just rumours. In the meantime, in place of snappy one-liners and close to the knuckle action, Daddy Day Care gives us toilet gags and cute kids and, if that's what you're into, then this film will keep you and your nippers entertained.
I personally didn't find it enjoyable but my nephew only wriggled around 2-3 times during the film and I take this as a sign that he enjoyed it. It's unfortunate that there weren't anymore jokes in it just for the adults like you find in so many "childrens" films these days.
I don't want to tell you anymore about the film because I don't want to ruin it, however there is one part in the film that the children in the cinema just could not stop laughing at, I didn't find it funny, but listening to the high pitched giggling of 50-60 kids made me laugh out loud and I realised that's what its all about. The Kids.
