Classic TV comedy from the Home Guards at Walmington-On-Sea who are both bumbling and ineffectual as well as incompetent which makes life chaotic for all around. Contains all of...
more...the first series followed by the remaining episodes of the second series. The other three instalments are missing and presumed lost forever. Episodes from Series 1 are: 'The Man And The Hour' in which the men get together to form the Home Guard following a radio broadcast, 'Museum Piece' finds Capt Mainwaring looking for guns for his men in the local museum, 'Command Decision' finds a Capt offering guns if he can take command of the platoon, 'Enemy Within The Gates' sees Capt Mainwaring giving a lecture on the recognition of enemy agents when he learns there is a reward for every Nazi captured, 'The Showing Up Of Cpl Jones' finds the platoon finally getting their uniforms and CPl Jones attempting an assault course and 'Shooting Pains' finds a shooting contest arranged to see who will form the honour guard when the Prime Minister pays a visit. Series 2 episodes are: 'Operation Kilt' which finds the platoon being attacked by the Highland Regiment, 'The Battle Of Godfrey's Cottage' Finds the platoon leaping into action and taking Godfrey's cottage to set up a machine post and 'Sergeant Wilson's Little Secret' finds Sergeant Wilson overhearing a conversation which implies that he might be the father of an expected child but, as usual, he gets the wrong end of the stick.

For those who are either not huge fans, or who've not yet acquainted themselves with the legend that is 'Dads army', the fantastic brisitsh comedy fom the 1960's.... It's a comedy series that used to be broadcast on the BBC starring : Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier, Jimmy Beck, Arnold Ridley, John Laurie, Ian Lavender, Clive Dunn and many others, however not with as long a roles.

It is about a group of men who are appointed as the home guards of thier home town, Walmington-On-Sea. In part it makes you glad they left these men behind and not on the front line as they are rather clumsy and incompetent beings who have remidal understandings of quite basically everything.

This box set publication consists of all of the entire 1st series of Dad's Army episodes as shown on BBC in 1960's as well as a couple of the rare, and what had been lost, episodes of the 2nd series as well. Episdoes include
1. 'The Man And The Hour' - this is where is all starts, the very first episode. Characters as first introduced and you get a feel for the backgrounds of the particular characters. You see the men get together for the first time and appointed their positions to form the Home Guard following a radio broadcast. Very funny episode and is the best one to watch if you've never seen the series before.
2. 'Museum Piece' - this episode features Capt Mainwaring - who is looking for guns for his men so they can protect their pride country, in the local museum. However twists and turns take place and the men find that they might have to resort to other measures to find weapons.
3. 'Command Decision' - another great episode, this time Capt Mainwaring offers guns in exchange to take over the command of the entire platoon. Noone seems happy with this, even with the temptation of fancy men-like war weapons on the table.
4. 'Enemy Within The Gates' - an episode where Capt Mainwaring gives a talk on the recognition of enemy agents. This is all due to him discovering that the British government will offer a reward for every Nazi Captured and wishes to motivate the squad to earn a few quid as well as, of course, helping win the war.
5. 'The Showing Up Of Cpl Jones' - this episode is one of my favourites, in this one we get to see the platoon actually getting their official uniforms eventually.
6. 'Shooting Pains' is all about a shooting contest arranged to see who will form the honour guard when the Prime Minister pays a visit. A good episode, i've seen this one so many times, and is actually one of the first ones i ever saw on BBC 2.

Each episode runs for about 20 minutes and has a brief indroduction, song and theme tune at the begining, as well as closing credits for each episode.
The extra bits on this DVD, only three though, (are from series two): these are called 1.'Operation Kilt' this ones about were they are attacked by the 'enemy' Highland Regiment and must find what little courage they have to fight back and protect their terriotory. 2.'The Battle Of Godfrey's Cottage' - this is where poor Godfrey's cottage gets invaded by the fleet in order to convert it into a military holding to set up a machine post.
3. 'Sergeant Wilson's Little Secret' this one sees mishaps and blundering adventures when Sergeant Wilson overhears a conversation which implies that he might be the father of an expected child but it turns out, he gets the wrong end of the stick. Very funny and also one of my favourites :)

Overall a 5 star rating, I absolutely love Dad's Army, the comedy is fantastic and for me, having not been around in the war - gives an interesting and happy bent on some of the horrific things that happened during world war II.
Fantastic comedy for both the old (who remember, 'oh yes, we had to do practices like that every week' and ' i remeber george from across the road used to have a similar problem with our home guard' to the young who are intrigued by the world in which they never grew up in. A happy, funny and feel good series, made even better by modern tehnology and the brilliance that is DVD format. Although lacking in extras, it is understandable as it's not a new product but memerly an upgrade of the original. Highly recommended to any dads army fan! A must for the collection - or perhaps a great easter gift?
Thank you so much for reading my review, best wishes as always, mintz x x
