I think this double pack edition of D-Day and The Young Lions is only worth buying but only for The Young Lions. The DVD comes with no special features, no card inlay to tell you about the movies or anything else remotely resembling information except what is on the cover. But at around £6 in the shops what do you expect. I can't I rave about either film because they are not classics and both are stories set in the second world war but neither of then are really war movies.
The Young Lions - Marlon Brando - as younger, fitter model compared to his later movies (Godfather, and Apocalypse Now).
This film is very much the better out of the two - it has a story line vaguely linked to the second world war and there are a few more action scene (and more realistic than D-Day). Its a B&W film but this doesn't matter because we get to see Brando do some fine acting in this film - I think it was his first 'big movie' or certainly one of the films that brought him to the screens back in the 1950's/ 1960's.
The film follows two lines, one of a German officer (Brando) and the other an American soldier. They eventual meet at the end of the film and I wont spoil the ending but one of them doesn't see 1945!
D-Day: 6th June
My mum brought it for me as a Christmas present because she knows I love war movies - so I was a little disappointed when I sat down and watch D-Day (there's me expecting The Longest day type movie) and all you get for most of the film is a love triangle between an American Officer, A British Commando Officer and a girl. Most of the movie is based around this love triangle and how each of them meet, split up, re-met and then so and so forth. The last part of the film sees our hero's land of Normandy beach and take the gun emplacements - the acting is pretty poor to say the least - perhaps I have now been spoilt by the likes of The Longest Day etc but hey - acting is acting and if you can act, you can act (unless your Michael Winner - no offence by the way!!) Anyway, the only good bit about the film is the Brit rescues the yank - yeah that'll show 'em and to relinquish the love he has for the girl back in London. They part as friends and the Brit officer wanders of onto the beach - the clever part and you have to listen carefully, we hear a sapper shout put that the beach hasn't been cleared of mines yet - you've guessed it - bang. Roll credits.
As a double pack goes, I wouldn't waste your money on this DVD unless you haven't got The Young Lions on DVD and you're a Marlon Brando fan.
