...This DVD is part of the History Channel World War II in Colour. It is the story (shown in colour) of how the people of the USA and Britain coped on the homefront, whilst the service personnel of both countries were away fighting against the Axis countries in what must have seemed like the four corners of the globe.
The Atlantic, the Pacific, Northern Europe, Southern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the far East, Australasia, and so forth.
The first chapter of the DVD is entitled "making do."
Because the programme was created for the American audience, it begins not at the start of the homefront in Britain, but with the homefront in America, which was basically created only when Pearl Harbour was attacked by the Japanese. Suddenly, America new what it was like to face a relentless enemy who seemed implacable and incapable...

Advantages: Well put together programme Disadvantages: Featured only American troops
...World War Two In Colour Face to Face is a truly remarkable documentary film. It consists of rare colour film footage, shot during the evil and desperate days that made up the Second World War.
The film was, in the main, all shot by film cameramen who were military personnel. Who genuinely braved the same hardships and difficulties that beset their military colleagues, compatriots and fellow combatants.
As the commentary on the DVD points out, the vast majority of people involved in the Second World War (the notes actually use the term "men") never had any experience of combat whatsoever. The figure quoted on the notes claim that as many as five out of six did not experience any combat, at all. I must admit that I found that figure rather surprising. These people provided the support services that kept the so-called war machine...

Advantages: What did Marlone Brando like when he was young Disadvantages: Poor story for D-Day: 6th June
...I think this double pack edition of D-Day and The Young Lions is only worth buying but only for The Young Lions. The DVD comes with no special features, no card inlay to tell you about the movies or anything else remotely resembling information except what is on the cover. But at around £6 in the shops what do you expect. I can't I rave about either film because they are not classics and both are stories set in the second world war but neither of then are really war movies.
The Young Lions - Marlon Brando - as younger, fitter model compared to his later movies (Godfather, and Apocalypse Now).
This film is very much the better out of the two - it has a story line vaguely linked to the second world war and there are a few more action scene (and more realistic than D-Day). Its a B&W film but this doesn't matter because we get to see...
