****Film Only Review****
Cursed was released back in 2005, directed by Wes Craven, who also directed one of my favourite horror films, "Scream". Having loved scream, I thought I would give this a go.
Plot -----
The story follows siblings Jimmy and Ellie who are accidently infected by a werewolf after they get scratched by one while trying to free a girl trapped in a car from an accident they had caused. They lost their parents in a car crash a few years ago, and live alone together. A good start! They start to notice changes in their bodies and behaviour, and after a bit of research, discover that not all myths are false.
They have to cut the blood line to be freed from a life as a werewolf, but they do not know who turned them, or who they are really in danger of. Throughout all this we also learn that Jimmy is trying to get the attentions of Brooke, a girl he likes from school and Ellie is trying to make her relationship with Jake, a bit of a ladies man club owner, work.
After a big showdown at Jakes club with the suspected "first" werewolf, will the siblings be able to get back to normal? Will they even survive?
Characters --------------
Christina Richie plays Ellie, the older sister. This sort of role is pretty spot on for her. Not too complex acting, a little dark humour, she plays someone who is slightly depressed and down trodden. A role she is used to. I quite liked the scenes where she is noticing her animal magnetism and lets her down for a while...literally.
Jimmy is played by Jesse Eiensburg someone I have never heard of before, but he seems very familiar to me. Not sure if I may have seen him in something else. I liked his younger brother character and found myself rooting for him when he makes the transition from school geek to someone who can stand up for himself. He was sweet and sincere in his acting and I liked it.
Joshua Jackson plays Jake, He doesn't have a very large role or a lot of screen time. His character is a bit bland and uninteresting, but believe that maybe to add more surprise to the revelation we find out about him later in the film.
Other characters:
Brooke - Kristina Anapau - Plays a sweet little good girl with bad guy role. Quite average Bo - Milo Ventimiglia - I was surprised to see a young Milo in this film, playing the school bully and current love of Brooke. The only other role i've seen being Peter from Heroes it was nice to see him be a bad guy.
So is it any good? ----------------------
I enjoyed this film. It was not as scary as I expected being from Wes Craven. But then it is a lower certificate and aimed at a slightly younger audience than the scream films. This in mind, I think it is well watchable and kept me amused for the whole time. I did jump quite a few times and was still amused at some of the few more lighthearted moments. Its a good thriller that won't give anyone nightmares.
I would watch it again, but I will say that a few of the werewolf scenes are a bit hit and miss. Some look computer animated and quite well done, especially some of the transformations, but then others look like a guy in a suit, which takes away a bit of the menace, and any tension that may have built up until seeing the creature.
Run time: 97 minutes Certificate: 15
Available from amazon for 9.79 but probably available in a few bargain bins now for less.
